Connecting to home wireless network

I have a new FreeAgent Theater plus.  I have a wireless network in my using using 802.11g.  Based on recommendations from this board I bought a Zonet ZEW2546 network USB adapter to connect my FAT+ to the home network.  When I start the device up and go to the screen for setting up a wireless network connection, it finds my network with good signal strength.  When I enter my WEP key it goes into testing the connection.  Then it just sits there, on the "testing connection" screen.  Any ideas on what I should try next?

Hi,

Please check if you have MAC Filter enabled in your WiFi Router, if yes, then add the MAC ID of your WiFi Adapter to the list and try again.

Re: Connecting to home wireless network

If you have any usb drives attached, disconnect them.  Also, you may try the other usb port.

If that fails, see what version of firmware you are using and reflash using the cold method.

- Reinstall firmware with the COLD METHOD

Try using WPA/WPA2 instead of WEP.

Re: Connecting to home wireless network

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll try them out.  In the meantime, I tried physically connecting the FAT+ to my router using an Ethernet cable.  That worked, thus showing that my FAT+ works.  Normally the router and the FAT+ will be in different parts of the house and that is why I am using wireless.  Also, as long as I had the FAT+ in the same room as the router, I tried using the Wifi adapter there in order to see if signal stength was an issue.  Well, even though I had 5 bars (as opposed to 3 when used in the room that I bought the FAT+ for), I got the same results.  It just sits there on the Test Connection screen with the little circle thing going round and round.

Re: Connecting to home wireless network

How do I find the MAC ID of the adapter?  I know how to find it on a computer.

On your computer (I supposed it's a Windows PC), open a DOS command window and do these 2 commands at the prompt

ping x.x.x.x    (whatever the IP address of the FAT+ is, for example 192.168.0.201)

after you see the output that the FAT has responded to the ping successfully, similar to following:

Pinging 192.168.0.201 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.0.201: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.201: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.201: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.201: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.201:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 3ms, Average = 1ms

Then execute this next command at the prompt:

arp -a

The output of "arp -a" will tell you the MAC address of the FAT+ adapter:

  Internet Address      Physical Address      Type
  192.168.0.201         xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx     dynamic

Re: Connecting to home wireless network

Success, one step at a time.  By changing my connection type from WEP to WPA I was able to get connected to my router and out to the internet.  The next problem to solve is that I can't stream Netflix movies because it tells me it can't connect to my local network.  I entered in my username and password but that failed.  Then I created a new username for the device, first with no password and then with a password, but no luck.  Still, I am getting somewhere.
