Hi Guys (my first post)...
I cannot wait for my new unit to come. It is for my bedroom mainly to watch divx/xvid/h.264 from my win7 shares. I already do have a HTPC w/XBMC in my basement to drive my projector.
I did read the manual [Edit: Please do not evade the word filter], but I would really appreciate if someone could answer few of my questions:
1) if the unit doesn't already have FW1.55 should I set the unit to manual FW update? or regardless should I take the latest and greatest online update? It seems from reading few posts there is a good number of users having problems after taking the latest online update.
2) what is the main difference between modded by playdude (big kudos) and original. Is it only to be able to connect to FAT+ from PC? I'm only to play movies off my PC using wired network, so do I really need it?
I'm sure I'll have more questions/feedback after I'll have a chance to play with the unit.
Thanks guys ![]()

My new FAT+ (preflashed with FW 1.55) unit arrived yesterday. I did dsiable auto update (just in case)
Everything works as it should. The smb win7 shares work fine and all the file formats work flawlessly (xvid/divx/h.264(720P/1080P)/dvd iso with menu). Also I was very supprised how well built-in web apps worked youtube and others. Also I like RSS Feeds. I'll try to get mikek999's custom RSS video feeds going at later time. Also I'll try to setup network shortcuts. The GUI is very simple and good enough for me. THe PQ only tried with 480I (using composite video output) was outstanding... downscaling works pretty nice. The unit got a little worm and it is a finger magnet to touch ![]()
Overall I'm very happy. Good job Seagate ![]()
One question, is it possible to display "file list" instead of folder icons? IMHO it would simplify navigation.

noobie,
Good to know that the FW 1.55 worked for you.
I am trying to see if I should send mine back for an exchange. May be you can help me with the following to help me make a decision
- Are you accessing files from a NAS and windows share? Does it work without any issues?
- What do you see when you go to "Browse"-->"Network"? Do you just see "My Shortcuts" icon or are you able to browse all the devices/workgroups on the network along with the icon?
- What is your FW version?
There is an option to set either list or thumbnail navigation. I think You need to hit the "menu" button and then choose movies/music/picture (depending on what you are browsing) and then you should be able to set that (something like View List or View Thumbnail.

Sure, I try my best to answer your questions:
I'm not using NAS, but full blown windows 7 pro 32bit system with smb shares.
I see both "My shortcuts" and "Workgroup". I use "Workgroup" which shows me all shared folders.
My brand new FAT+ came with preflashed 1.55
Thanks for the view list trick, someone already told me about it.
If you have any more questions shoot. ![]()

My FAT+ shows the version number 01.55.299221U. You can find that by pressing Menu button on the remote, then choose
Settings ---> System Setup ---> Version Information. If you don't mind, could you please post what you see on your end? (to ensure there is something different on my FW vs yours, as I can not see the "Workgroup" option under "Network" unlike others with FW 1.45 and 1.55).
Anyway, it is good to know that with FW version 1.55 on a new machine you can get to "Workgroup". When I got FAT+ from bestbuy, it had version 1.03 or 1.04 on that and it got updated to 1.55 with automatic update. I am suspecting something didn't get upgraded properly during that update and I can not roll back the update anymore

Sure I'll give a full FW # later today...
I could be wrong (maybe someone can correct me) but I remember reading somewhere here. That Seagate tech support person pointed someone to some special page to "properly" reflash their FAT+. It didn't seem to me like it was FW1.55 URL, but something else. Did you try to reflashing with Fw1.55 as per Seagates instructions?
I did turn off the auto-update to off, before connecting to the network but the unit came with preflashed 1.55 ![]()

I reflashed following their instruction and also tried recovery FW, but no difference so far. I tried the cold method with FW 1.55 and it wouldn't flash the FW. I also tried Recovery FW followed by FW 1.55. None of that made any difference so far.
Thanks for your input on this

Good Catch Leosun17 ![]()
MY FW says 01.55.299220U, perhaps this is the reason my workgroup works. Hopefully someone else with 1.55 with working workgroups can tell us if the have 220U or 221U FW... Also it would be nice if there was a log describing differences betweeen firmwares...
BTW... I found this thread with the user who got his brand new FAT+ with preflashed 220U and everything works fine.

Thanks noobie.
I am just wondering if this is the reason why I am unable to flash the FW. May be seagate has some kind of version check and since my FW is 221 version, it refuses to go back to 220 version. Even after I applied recovery FW, it keeps showing 221 as the FW version.
