First, if you are a newbie, you should keep in mind that your FAT+ is not a "Magic Box". If you were looking for a device that acted like your PC, then you got the wrong product. If what you wanted is a device that would let you play all your media, access your network media and watch and listen to internet media and have something that didn't cost you an arm & a leg to do it, then that's what you have.
GETTING YOUR VIDEO'S ON YOUR HARDRIVE:
Now, your FAT+ does not let you put your video's on your hard drive. If you are new to this, then you need to know that you have to have seperate software to do this. You will need to have something like DVDFAB or ANYDVD. (Personally I like DVDFAB, because even though you have to pay for it to have full functionality, you can use the Full Disc & Main Movie for free. Where as ANYDVD is only trialware and it will stop functioning after the trial period has ended).
UPDATE: If you use or are going to get DVDFAB, download the lastest beta version, HERE. You can also get the new DVDFAB Passkey, which is free during the beta testing stage.
You will also want DVD SHRINK, which will compress your videos to a smaller size and HANDBRAKE, which will compress your videos to mp4 & mkv containers (and will make your video's about half the size or smaller of the original file, yet keep most of the quality).
On a personal note: I prefer converting my movies to mkv, due to the ablity to have DTS on my movies that have it and that mkv is the only (that I know of) container that the FAT+ will allow you to jump chapters. Just make sure you have the right codecs for your PC so that you watch them on your computer, DivX codecs will allow you to watch mkv video on WMP. You will also want to get AC3 Filter so that your WMP will play AC3 audio.
You should also vist VIDEO HELP, for a lot more information.
GETTING YOUR COVER ART TO SHOW UP:
FIrst, you should know that the only way to get your movies to show up as the cover art is to have your drive directly connected to your FAT+. Your movies will not show up as your cover art over the network. Now, with that said, the quickest and easiest way to get all your cover art is to download MY MOVIES COLLECTION MANAGEMENTwhich is freeware. Once you have that, then follow these instructions:
Ok, First, for "My Movies" to add the data automatically, (when I say automatically, what I mean is it will gather the cover art & metadata and apply it to your movie, you still need to do a little work for the FAT+ to see your cover art) you need to have your movie files in a seperate folder, with the folder name being the name of the movie.
NOTE: This works if your movie files are in DVD format, ISO, mkv & mp4 (I don't know if it works for avi's, wmv or any other format) (For mkv & mp4's I recomend naming the movie file the same as your movie & placing it in a folder of the same name) (For DVD format, there is no need in renaming the video file names, just make the folder the same name as your movie).
Now, if you have that, open My Movies Collection Manager, the go to "File", click on "Import", click on "Folder Content". A "Browse for Folder" widow should open up, click on the Drive &/or the Folder (select the main Folder, it will import all the data for all the movies in that folder) where your movies are stored then click "Ok".
Once it gets through collecting the cover art & metadata, go to the left side of "My Movies", where there should be a list of your movies. Click on each one to make sure that it has the correct cover art for your movie. If it doesn't, right click on the the movie (in the list on the left), then click "Change Title Source and Data", and a window should pop up. Select the "By Title" tab and in the "Movie Title" box type the title of your movie and click "Search. A list of movies will show up at the bottom, select the one you want to change your cover art to and then click "Change".
Now, for your FAT+ to see the cover art, for your movie you well need to go to the folder were you have your movie and open it. You should see a file named "folder" which will be the front cover art for your movie. DO NOT DELETE OR RENAME THIS FILE, you will want it if you use it on "Windows Media Center". Copy the file named "folder" and then paste it in the same folder. It should say something like "folder-copy" (if your on Windows 7), now rename it the same name of your movie (the same name of your containing folder). That's it, you should have all your movie cover art.
Oh, and you will want to delete the folder ".Theater" before you go and plug your hard drive back into your FAT+. Don't worry though, your FAT+ will rebuild this folder. If you don't delete it though, you may not see all your cover art. You need to do this everytime you add new movies.
Also, if you have a box set, like Matrix, Matrix: Reloaded and Matrix: Revolutions. To make your FAT+ keep them in the right order, you should name them with 1, 2, 3, etc., ie: name your movies, Matrix 1, Matrix 2 - Reloaded and Matrix 3 - Revolutions. If you don't your movies may not stay in the right order.
WINDOWS 7, NETWORK PROBLEMS:
So, you have Windows 7, but you can't get your FAT+ to log on to the network. Well here's some instructions to help you get around that:
First go to the Control Panel, then select Network & Sharing Center, then on the left pane select "Change advanced sharing settings".
Then select in the settings:
Turn on network discovery
Turn on file & printer sharing
Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read & write files in the Public folders
on Media Streaming (I'll come back to that)
Enable file sharing for devices that use 40 -or 56-bit encryption
Turn off password protected sharing
Now make sure you have the same setting for both Home or Work & Public profiles
For the Media Streaming, select "Chose media streaming options...", the on the "Show devices on:" dropdown box select "All networks". You should then see something that says "Unknown Device", make sure that it has "Allow" beside it.
IF that doesn't work, try this:
1. On the right side Double Click on everyoneincludesanonymous and in the window that pops up, change the value data from a 0 value to a 1
2. Double Click on NoLmHash and in the window that pops up, change the Value Data from a 1 value to a 0
3. Now navigate to the following location in the registry editor
Double Click on restrictnullsessaccess and change the 1 value to a 0
Reboot your pc and you should now be able to connect to your pc from you Freeagent Theater+
This works for me, I also have my drives shared with full access on my LAN
You will still see the Login screen just click OK and you should have access to your drives.

This should also work with Vista.
Here a link for WINDOWS XP network problems. (Give a few Kudos to bodhi78 for this one)
PROBLEMS UPDATING YOUR FIRMWARE:
If your having problems updating your firmware, weather your installing PLAYDUDES modified 1.26 firmware, the 1.27 FIRMWARE or the new 1.45 FIRMWARE, I have only 2 words for you COLD METHOD. This will solve most of your updating problems. Also, I would suggest that you use a blank USB stick and make sure that you only extract the "install.img" file to your USB stick. DO NOT just copy the .zip file to your USB stick, you will not be able to update your firmware.
UPDATE (3-21-10): The APAC version of the 1.45 fw is just an empty zip file. The moderator (AlanM) has been notified, but it is unknown when this will be fixed.
THIS HAS NOW BEEN CORRECTED

One more thing.
TO GET MORE STEAMING VIDEO (HULU, NETFLIX, ETC.)
If you want to watch you favorite TV shows and have all those streaming movies, you'll want to get PLAYON from Media Mall. This will let you watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Amazon VOD, and many others on your FAT+.
This is trialware and you can use it for 14 days for free, although with my experience after the 14 days they'll send you an e-mail giving you another 14 days (you just have to reinstall it). I don't know what happens after that (I haven't gotten past my second 14 days). If you want to buy PlayON, it is $39.99, but they will offer it to you (at least from my experience) for $29.99 after the 1st 14 day trial period is up.
This is a good program, it runs in the background and uses very little resources. Best of all, you don't have to do anything to your FAT+ or PC to play the streaming media on your FAT+. All you have to do is install it on your computer, make sure PlayOn is running in the background, then go to your FAT+, select Devices/Media Servers/PlayOn and away you go.
Don't you wish that your FAT+ would list your movies by Genre?
HERE'S A LITTLE TRICK TO GET YOU MOVIES LISTED BY GENRE:
When you name your movie's, use a suffix.
(I haven't done this with all my movies yet, but for the one's I have it works pretty good. If it doesn't for you let me know.)
Example: "Shrek" will now be "AI - Shrek". See what I mean?
Example 2: "Star Wars" will now be "SI - Star Wars".
Here's just a short list of suffixes to use:
AI - for animation (this should put these at the top for the kids), also AF - for all family (I know it could be FA - for family, but it wouldn't keep it at the top)
AT - for action
CM - for comedy
DR - for drama
SI - for sci-fi
SC - for scary
MA - for mature
and so own. I know that this might be a pain, but until Seagate gets the FAT+ to read the metadata and put it in the genre it belongs you have to do work arounds.
JUST REMEMBER to name everthing that needs to be (ie: movie, cover art, folder) is all the same name.

Does PlayOn require the new 1.45 firmware? I have PlayDudes 1.26 and am loving being able to copy to my Fat+'s drive over my network. I don't want to lose that feature so I'm reluctant to update, but I want to check out Hulu etc.

No, PlayOn should work with any FW version. Worked on my FAT+ with playdudes mod FW before I upgraded to the new 1.45.
PlayOn is just a UPnP media server, it just allows your FAT+ to access HULU......, through your computer.

Tinwable, are there any big differences between 1.27 and 1.45? Looks like 1.45 hasn't been officially announced yet since the Seagate website says the latest version is 1.27.

Yeah, it's got a new user interface (Has the same Movies, Music, etc., on home page, but also shows Internet Apps, Network, Devices and Media Servers on the home page), looks just like the pic HERE. It is also supposed to have better UPnP/DLNA compliance and you can see more movie thumbnails per page. I haven't had it long enough to see what other things may be different, but so far it's all working good.
You can see the Release Notes to see the rest of the changes.
And I know that it still says 1.27 on the US download page (but you can get it by my link above), but it is 1.45 on the EMEA & APAC page. Although the APAC zip is empty. A just think that someone is falling down on their job. Also, the only way to install it successfully is by the Cold Method, I haven't heard of anyone having a successful install using the "Automatic Update" through the FAT+.
Also, something else I just noticed. Now when you plug in the drive, instead of just having a circle go around and around, now it has an animated magnifing glass and it says "Indexing Content".

I have all of my media on a NAS device, and want the FAT+ to display the cover art. I opened a case with Seagate tech support about it not showing up, and they told me that it just takes a long time to generate the files on a NAS device, so to leave it logged in for a long time and eventually they would show up. This seems to contradict what you said...are you sure it doesn't work unless the drive is USB-attached? I can't check right now, because my unit is going back for repair at the moment, as it stopped responding to the remote control.
03-24-2010 08:04 PM
Well, either it doesn't or it takes a really loooooooong time for it to generate. Someone else may want to chime in here if they've had a different experience, but I have had mine logged in for quite a while and I have never had my media on my network show up as the cover art for the thumbnails.
