So I've brought a Fat+ to go with my FreeAgent Go 500gb Hard drive.
When I got home it worked fine but every 1-2 minutes it would reset itself and go back to the home page, after trying to work out what the problem was with no luck I went back to exchanged it, got home and it did the same thing, now it would freeze when i clicked on either Movies, Music, Picture, I could only access the files through devices menu and even then it would reset, so I thought 3rd time lucky and got my third FAT+ but no change in behavior. it has really baffled me and my friends. does anyone else have this problem.
I haven't installed any updates; I literally took it out of the box plugged it in, inserted my hard drive and went to watch a movie and it would continually restart, even when I'm not trying to watch something, whilst sitting in the menu page it would still reset; the people at the store have no idea and suggested to take a WD media player, but until now SeaGate has never failed me and I doing something wrong (i can't see what though) or have I just been that unlucky with 3 faulty players.

What FW version is installed on your FAT+?

First, you should know that there has been some issues with using the GO drives with the FAT+, you can see such a thread HERE. I don't know if this has anything to do with your problem, just thought that you should be aware.
What you should try first, is to take your drive, plug it into your PC and open it and delete the folder named ".Theater" (this is were the FAT+ builds the indexing for your drive and will rebuild it after you plug it back in your FAT+). Then safely remove your GO drive and plug it back into your FAT+, but do not plug it into the GO drive port, plug it into the rear port with a USB cable. Now turn on your FAT+ and wait for it to build the indexing for your drive, you will, depending on the firmware you have, either a Blue Circle on the lower right hand side of your screen or it will say "Indexing Content" on the lower left hand side of the screen. Depending on how many files you have on your drive, it may take a few minutes, and it may go away and come back a couple of times, so be patient. Once done, try and see if you can watch a movie then.
Also, you may want to make sure that you hard drive is format as either FAT, FAT32, NTFS or Mac HFS+.

Wish i had of come across this page before having bought the thing. I read a number of product reviews at heaps of different sites and not one mentioned a problem like this. They all said it was a simple plug and play. makes you wonder.
I've now upgraded the firmware both ways, tried deleting the Theatre folder, and tried having my Freeagent Go 880gb connected through the front USB rather than the internal connector.
None of these things fixed the problem.
I've written to the support people and am hoping they can offer a solution.
I don't understand why 10 years later we still don't have an easy to use media playing device. I know Sony has released a no frills attempt, but honestly, where are all the big players ????
Sigh.
If anyone has any other suggestions, i'd love to hear them.
Thanks

Hi Bodhi,
Thanks for your reply which i saw, but which has now disappeared. Not sure if you self edited or if big brother is playing games.
firsty, yep, it's def an 880gb. i thought it was a weird amount, normally they're in the habit of just doubling things... it's the sme width and lenght as the other FA GO drives, but a little thicker. Still fits the FAT+ slot alright, you just need to take both of the plastic protectors off first.
I'm not hooked up to a network. the iphone is the only internet connection i've got. tried pluggig it into he FAT+ but it wouldn't recognise it. so, i don't think either the wired or the wireless descriptions apply to my set up?
Tried your suggestion of plugging the unit straight into the wall. it still conks out.
interestingly, i've noticed that it conks out fairly quickly when i've got a drive plugged into it, whereas it seems content just to sit there when there's not drive plugged in. so, perhaps it is a power supply issue.
any other thoughts?

Don't know what happened there, either the wine or big brother strikes again ![]()
Interesting about the difference with/without the USB drive plugged in. What kind of TV do you have?
Plasma or LCD or CRT? sometime the backlight causes problem for the remote, too. The FAT+ remote signal processing is known to sometime going crazy with cable box, FIOS, too. It would be not too farout to suspect the backlight. It's worth a try: put the sunglasses (polarize is even better) over the remote eye, and use the remote to turn it on, if it's stay on, leave it there for a while to see how it behaves. It's very strange that the other poster had 3 faulty units in a row (usually it's something in the setup or the room that trigger the FAT+ problem).

Further thought: you mentioned that you updated the FW a few times, but what FW do you have? if it's 1.45 or before, have you tried to flash the old FW? like 1.26 or 1.27?

Hi Bodhi,
quirked an eyebrow re your sunnies suggestion but gave it a lash nonetheless. no luck. 8 (
I've got 42 inch Panasonic LCD. i've tried connecting to it sing composite and HDMI. no luck either way.
Re the Firmware. I upgraded it to 1.45 ( the APAC version given i'm han Aussie) Can't rememeber what the previous version was, but it was definitely an older one. Can't see an option to download any but the most up to date version. Do you have copies of the previous versions i could try? IF so, would be great if you could send them to me. I'm at [Edited: Removed personal information per the community rules and regulations.] etc
not sure what else to try otherwise. Was hoping i'd come home to a magic bullet from the support guys, but alas no. I've flicked them another email, just in case they signed off on it already. (got some funny email saying that because i'd searched the self support section, they may not worry about contacting me further )
anyhoo, fingers crossed the solution will come along soon or it's back to the orphanage with yet another media player.
Cheers for your help thusfar
