I don't believe mkv's are supported on the original FAT.

Are they ever going to fix this up.
Is there a patch or 3rd party firmware that will allow MKV

Nope. The original FAT has been out of production for a year. No custom firmware.

First, the Firmware: I beilieve that you have an Internet connection, right? If so, just connect your FreeAgent to your modem using a patch cable (RG45) and from the menu navigate to Update Software. If your connection is OK it will go ahead and do the job. I did it twice since I purchased my FreeAgent and it works fine.
Second, the MKV: I've had no problems playing MKV files even with subtitles. It works fine. Maybe your problem is really the firmware. If you dont have an Internet connection you can download it from here:
If you can't find this navigate to Downloads entry in the Menu on the left side of the Forum.
Good luck!

HI AussieTuca,
This thread is about the original FAT, not the FAT+.

Ooops! Sorry!
In any case, I think it is still valid. If not, my apologies...

Well, nothing can solve the problem of not being able to play .mkv's. There's another thread around about 2 versions past the last "official" FAT firmware that aren't available unless you contact their customer service, so the auto-update still doesn't give FAT users the latest firmware.
btw, welcome to the board!

I am still curious why some users insist in using FAT or FAT+. Is there any advantage or particular features in doing this?
