Theater+ Will Not Recognize USB Devices After A While

This is my second device with this same problem. After plugging and un-plugging different USB devices--flash drive, hard drive, etc.--the Theater+ will no longer recognize any USB media that is inserted. It did work for a while, but now it will not recognize anything USB. The USB icon is not even displayed in the Devices menu anymore.

I have removed the power, reset the device many times, etc., to no avail.

Thoughts and suggestions?

Re: Theater+ Will Not Recognize USB Devices After A While

After much trial and error, I have discovered that the Theater+ has a major bug.

The issue of not recognizing any USB device was caused by connecting a USB drive (a Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB) that was formatted with NTFS with a cluster size of 64K. Once this drive was connected to the Theater+ it would no longer scan for or recognize any USB devices regardless of whether or not the 2TB drive was connected to the player or not.

I reformatted the drive with 4K clusters. I then went through many hard resets and power cycles. Eventually, the Theater+ would indeed recognize the 2TB drive and any other USB device.  I have not experimented with other cluster sizes to see what other sizes the Theater+ does not like.

Seagate, please either fix this bug or document the fact that the Theater+ will not work with drives that are formatted with certain cluster sizes. This issue has needlessly caused you one product return already, and will likely cause many more.

Dear Seagate support and friends,

I have the same problem with this issue. Could you please assist how can I fix this problem ?

The player sometime reading USB devices, but sometime the menu display an error " audio not supported" and not recognize any USB memory stick or external hard drives.

The player has been using for approx. 13 months and then now it has got trouble. The quality of this product is really bad

Regards,

Peter

Me too! Same Problem. After about two hours of screwing with this thing I realized my Hard Drives and thumb/jump drives were all formatted to FAT32. After I reformatted to NTFS everything seems to be fine. Pain in the **bleep** to reload everything (Music, Pics, Video) onto clean drives, but like I said after the reformat everything works.

@Peter,

Try reflash the same FW version using Cold method. See the FW 101 section in prairiedog's sticky thread above.

Hmmmm. If both, front and rear USB ports are inop, any suggestions on how to load the firmware? Can you load the image thru a go drive in the bay?

Yes, you can use the GO drive to flash FW, too. Just make sure there are no files in the top level folder, except the FW image (existing folders are OK). The format needs to be FAT32, though.
Or you can buy an adapter for the inside mimi USB port like this (so you can use a normal flash drive):
