Vietnamese Subtitle problem

I have bought a new Seagate GoFlex TV yesterday and I have problem when try viewing my movies with Vietnamese subtitle. The subtitle automatically hides Vietnamese characters such as: "người" becomes "ngi". I tried all the Text Encoding in Settings but no luck. I have visited this forum and found many people have the same problem that can't be solved. Hope someone can modify the firmware for supporting Asian Subtitles... Is there any help? :smileysad:

Can you find out which fonts set that will work for Vietnamese subtitles on Linux? I recalled reading about some  arial.ttf that works but not sure which one. If you can find that info, then we can take a look in the FW and see whether it's possible to replace the fonts set in Mod 2.23.

Re: Vietnamese Subtitle problem

Thank you a lot.

Beside normal character, Vietnamese language uses these special character:

àáâảạấầẩậắằẳ

èéêẹẻẽếềểễệ
ìíịỉ
òóôõọỏốồổỗộớờởỡợơ
ùúûụủứừửữựư
đ

And almost Unicode fonts will support it, such as Tahoma, Arial...

To find more information, you can take a look this page:

http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Vietnamese.html

In my attachment is the Arial Font copied from my Windows. Hope it can help you.

Thank you again for considering my question.

Could you provide the FreeSans.ttf font (this is one of the 2 ttf I found in the FAT+ FW). It seems the FAT+ does not use arial.ttf.

wazu site description:

Stats: Version 1.76 has 2,734 glyphs and no kerning pairs
Support: Armenian, Bengali, Cyrillic (all or most of range), Devanagari, Greek (including polytonic), Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hebrew, Japanese (Hiragana and Katakana only), Latin, Vietnamese

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I have found that font (my attachment). I sent you the pack including FreeSans, FreeSansBold and FreeSansOblique. But I notice that the Bold and the Oblique do not support special character yet.

Hope this font pack can match the font in FW.

Thank you very much.

P.S: Actually, this font pack is converted from a FreeSans pack font for Linux (with the .sfd filetype). If you also need that, download it here: link

Re: Vietnamese Subtitle problem

Good news!

I was able to test the 2 truetype fonts FreeSans and Arial that you've provided. The arial.ttf was in fact used by the FAT+ for subtitles. And with this arial.ttf font file, Vietnamese subtitles were displayed correctly.

I did this in Mod FW 2.23. Basically, I've added an overmount command to point to the new font file.

It is also possible to replace the font in official FW 2.20 temporarily. But it's not a permanent fix, and it will involve the user to telnet into the FAT+ to overmount the font file.

I will implement the new font overmount to Mod 2.23 FW. You could then flash the Mod 2.23 FW to be able to display Vietnamese subtitles and a whole bunch other languages. This is recommended if you're comfortable with Linux telnet and command lines.

PS. Please post some info about languages supports by this arial.ttf font file.

Re: Vietnamese Subtitle problem

Wow, very nice job!

Okay, I found some information about the Arial font from here:

Support: Arabic script (Arabic, Ajami, Azeri, Balochi, Berber, Brahui, Kazakh, Kirghiz Kurdish, Lahnda, Jawi, Pashto, Persian, Shahmukhi, Sindhi, Uighur, Urdu, Uzbek), Cyrillic (Russian plus other Slavic and non-Slavic languages), Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Vietnamese.

Spoiler

I also found that, there is also another Arial font that support more languages called "Arial Unicode MS". But the size of it is so big (~23MB). If you feel interested in it, the information is describe here and you can download it from here. The point is that it support more Asian Language than the normal one (such as Japanese, Korean, Thai...) but it has a license (it is included in the MS Office XP setup). So, I'm not sure if it is better for using than the normal Arial.

Finally, thank you very much. I'm excitedly waiting for the FW you're working :smileywink:
