Re: "Can not boot from HDD" message on a new screen. Mine is a brick.

GOT THE FIX!!! Have your serial etc ready and go to the Technical support page. Do a CHAT with one of the people and tell them you need the 1.55 recovery firmware for Theater Plus. They will show you the link and give you a certificate number to get that download. Be patient for them to get the info for you (about 3-5 minutes)

Follow the Cold Boot procedures. I booted to the Cannot boot from HDD then held in the reset, plugged in the usb Stick to the Front USB port (ONLY) and then disconnected the power, reconnected the power with the reset button still held down until the Seagate screen came up, then released the reset button and prayed!! The seagate screen stayed on until the flash was recognized then the performing an update showed. All works fine and it fixes a known issue with the Netflix and certain conditions.

Have fun

Thank you deshutesman ( see above ) as I've done the recovery too!

But did you pray? :smileyhappy: I'm glad you and deshutesman got it recovered.

Re: "Can not boot from HDD" message on a new screen. Mine is a brick.

I had FW 1.26 and everything was working fine. I also had automatic update turned off (no updates without my permission). Guess what? the box automatically updates and I now have a door stopper (an expensive one). Why in the world FAT+ automatically update itself? And b.t.w. the fix/solution provided does not work (cold update of course you have no other choice). I don't know what other information is/was fetched without my knowledge but that is a separate issue on its own.

Does any one know how to remove all this 'netflix nonsense' and roll back to an earlier version?

No, there is no way to roll back the firmware from the 1.55 FW, it has been locked.  However, you should post your displeasure HERE.

If your FAT+ has been bricked though, you should use the "Fix" stated above to at least get it to a usable state.

I had auto update turned off as well. This irritates me to no end. I got it unbricked by getting the recovery firmware from support. They actually tried telling me to call them during their support hours and of course it isn't during their support hours right now. I told them I wanted it fixed now, not when THEY decide to open up shop to fix it. They updated it without my permission / knowledge and they can fix it right away. I wish there were a way to downgrade to the old firmware though. This netflix auto update thing pisses me off.

Tinwable, you got it all wrong. It is not only my displeasure it is ABUSE by seagate's auto fix working without my permission and damaging my box. After all it is my property and it should not be temperd without my permission. They don't practice what they preach, this makes them what? ___ for the lack of better word? The issue started with and is associated with the subject of this thread, so I think it is the best place to post. Having said that, without an unbiased certification/audit of the software and practices, it will not bring confidence back in seagate (at least mine).

Secondly, the fix posted and suggested did not work (tried 3 times at least). Once I can get the box working, it is out on ebay for sell. I need a personal media player and don't care who seagate partners with delivering digital content.

Thirdly, it is time for Seagate to open up the source code at least an earlier version without netflix.

I'm not sure how I got it wrong.  That this has not happened to everyone (the firmware updating without your premission) I would not call it ABUSE.  It is more of INCOMPETENCE on the development of the firmware that is does not operate as advertised and that it has NOT gone throught the proper de-bugging process to asure that it will not operate outside it's specifications.

It is unfortunate that you did not get your FAT+ working, but this is a community of users trying to help other users to overcome their problems.  If something suggested here doesn't work and you are angry about your FAT+ being bricked, which is understandable, you should escalate your problem to Seagate support and demand that THEY resolve your issues or replace your unit since it was their firmware that caused your issue.

Re: "Can not boot from HDD" message on a new screen. Mine is a brick.

Try contacting tech support in the online "CHAT" session. Then use the fix that has worked for others.

Do not email them due to the fact they do not respond. They want you to review the results on their website when you login and check their answers.

Here is the text from my fix:

Re: "Can not boot from HDD" message on a new screen. Mine is a brick.

I have tried the FIX.  Got a recovery file from a chat support person today, did the cold boot, and all seems to be well..

Mine was froze, it did an automatic update. I had that set to manual, but think that I may have reset the unit once, and that might have reset it to automatic update,,,

Now I am at 1.55, would have rather not gone to this one, no mods available, but oh, well,,, At least its no longer a brick....

Good luck, and thank you to chat support for sending me the recovery file..

So-

What is the 1.55 recovery firmware?

How is it different from the regular firmware?

When you unzip the file, and/or untar the install.img, what is the file listing?

Aside from telling you that it would solve your problem, what explanation did they give for the origin of your problem?
