I purchased a FreeAgent GoFlex external (1T) hard drive in October, formatted it for my MAC & have been backing up images since then, WITH NO PROBLEM. I am a photographer & needed a portable external hard drive for backing up images/sessions. I went to go back up a completed session an hour ago & when I plugged in the USB it gave me this notification...
MAC OS X can't repair the disk "FreeAgentGoFlex Drive."
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can. .....
I can open any file I want to off the external but when I try & move any files over to the external it won't allow me! I have 280GB used space on this drive & I have NO IDEA where I'm supposed to back up all this information while reformatting. ALSO, WHY IN THE WORLD did it do this? I have done NOTHING to my computer, other than using it for daily use. PLEASE HELP!!!!! I NEED TO GET THIS SESSION COMPLETED BY TOMORROW. It's my son's 1st birthday on the 17th (Thursday) & I want to be free of this by then!!!!!
Thanks in advanced!

So your data is not backed up?
I am sorry to have to tell you this now, but here's the deal. It is essential that you keep a backup, a 2nd copy, of your data at all times. If you remove the files from your Mac's internal drive, and you have only the copy that is on the external drive, you do not have a backup. You have one copy of your data. Put your data on another storage media, a 2nd storage media. Online storage, another external hard drive, another internal hard drive, tape, whatever. If the external hard drive fails, you'd have to use data recovery services, which are almost always very expensive. So always keep a backup.
Now, I'd recommend that you go into Disk Utility and try to run the Disk First Aid, to try to bring the drive back.
If that doesn't work, connect it to another Mac to try to access it.
If that doesn't work, connect it to a PC and try to copy the data off.
If that doesn't work, I'd suggest googling for a Mac-based data recovery software.

oh my gosh...you are a awesome! i was having the same issue. i had the first time setup of the external hhd on my PC running win7. accessed it with no problems. then got a macbook air, and realized i wanted to xfer between the external hhd and the macbook. i ran the osx setup; but wasnt able to copy/move anything to/from between it and my macbook. ran the disk utility app to repair...and viola! simple as that. thanks a bunch, alanm!!!
