Recently bought a 2TB NAS .... set up, xfered files and 45mins later it died ...... back to shop, week later new device.
I would like this device to have the same name as it means my LAN (and my OCD) are happy !!!!!
BUT, when i try and reinstall it tells me that name already exists !!! Where does it register it's name?
Can't find it in the registry (searched for the device name & for GoFlex)
Any Help Much Appreciated

If you are talking about the goflex Home, then the name is registered to the unique product key on Segate servers. You can't have two devices with the same name.
But that only affects remote access or through the Seagate Share interface. On your LAN it will be called Goflex_Home regardless of the name you register it with.
If you actually have more than one Goflex Home on your LAN this becomes a problem

Can that be changed then ??
As the devices are different units (S/N will be diff) is it just the name ??

You can change the local device name if you want more than one GFH on your LAN. Your router doesn't know the SN or Product key. The devices have a different mac addresses so your router won't get confused but when you are trying to browse through explorer, that's when you will have problems.
Since I only have one GFH I haven't bothered looking too closely into this issue, but refer to this thread http://forums.seagate.com/t5/GoFlex-Net-GoFlex-Hom
So, on your LAN you can't tell two GFHs apart, but when you register the device with Seagate the unique 16 alpha product key is linked to the name you register.
When you want to log in remotely the software will check with Seagate servers to match the product key and name to an IP address so you don't need to know your home IP address, which is handy because for most users it will change whenevr you reboot your router. That is why you can't have two names the same.
Whoever ends up with the unit you returned is going to have problems when they try to register it.
