GoFlex Base Swap-out

I received by 3TB Go-Flex drive for my MAC today which only came with the 2.0 USB connection.  I have already ordered the firewire 800 base, but will not arrive until next week.  My question is, can I install the GoFlex and then swap out to the firewire base once it arrives?
