I have a GoFlex Desk external harddrive of 2TB, and was wondering if it's possible to do a *low-level* format of it myself?
I know that for internal drives, low-level formats are usually performed by booting the computer with a special program supplied by the drive's manufacturer for that particular drive, but what about for an USB-connected external drive? I would assume it would be safer to use a program running under an OS...
Where can I get (download) suitable tools? I run Linux (Ubuntu) and WindowsVista.

It's not strictly speaking a low-level format, but it is a zero-fill.
