Just bought the Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 500BG and backed up my C: drive on my Windows XP desktop. For some reason, most of my PDF files now end in "pdf.ptl" on the GoFLex and I can not open them. Why did this happen and how can I make them normal again? All I wanted to do was back up my important data.
Please help,
Thanks.

PLEASE HELP ME TOO!!!!
The same thing has happened to me after a MEMEO restore on Windows 7- except the .ptl file extension and/or .dcm file extension has been added to over 10.000 files of different types .pdf, .exe, .jpeg, .exe .obj etc.
I thought that these .ptl /,dcm files were 'duplicates' as have been suggested. But now I'm finding that NO- the original files themselves have been changed- making them unusable. The file sizes are not 2kb - they range from 1kb to over 15 MB.
This is a DISASTER!!! as many of these files are costly 3d files and cannot be redownloaded. It has taken MONTHS (I'm not kidding) to organize these files.
How can I restore these files to their original form?

I have the Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 1TB and backed up few off my study materials on it. The hard drive includes movie files as well as audio files. The files in my folder have ended up with ".ptl" extension and I'm unable to access them. These are really important files for me and I need to restore them back so that I can access them. I have no idea when did this happen and how.

.ptl means "path too long". Probably these files were sort of buried in a deep folder structure, or they looked that way to Memeo.
Can you move them to a folder closer to the root? Can you drag and drop them to the GoFlex drive?

my files are already in the GoFlex drive (the external drive where i copy my data from the internal drives of my PC). the files were all fine before a week or so but suddenly they were converted.
for instance,
i have a folder naming "twilight" in the GoFlex drive and it has 16 mp3 files. i normally hear the soundtracks in a week or 2.
out of 16 mp3 files 3 of them were converted to ".ptl" files and the other 13 files remained the way they were
i'm sending u the link of my image, if you could please download and have a look. it would be of great help
thanks.

I'll be happy to help but that link doesn't work for me. Can you upload it somewhere else?

The path is too long, maybe if you didn't have the song and artist name twice in each file name you wouldn't see the problem.
To correct it, just click the View and Restore in the Memeo software and select the file to restore (it will be listed by its actual name in the software; track 1 and 9 are the one renamed), and when it is restored it put the proper name back.
Otherwise just copy the file and rename it. Do not rename it on the backup drive. Changing files on the backup could break the backup.

having the song and the artist name twice is not an issue (i think) because i have other folders which contain audio files in the same naming manner and they are unaffected.
and regarding the restoring process theres a problem ....
when i bought my hard disk i copied all my data into my drive as backup (using the seagate software), meaning i had two files
1. original ones on my comp drive, and
2. backedup files on my external drive
as days passed i started falling short of disk space and i deleted the original files on my computer drive so i now only have the files on my EXTERNAL HARD DISK ![]()
plus, i started modifying the files on my EXTERNAL DRIVE (which obviously BROKE the Backup) and started using it as my normal drive (using the cut, copy, paste tools for adding or transfeering files)
So now theres no way i can use the backup software of seagate as all the files on my EXT drive were modified by me ![]()
the files which are affected are not only audio files and movie files. i'm attaching another screenshot of all my affected file which include
.mp3
.avi
.psd
.jpg and on and on ...........
i dont know how all of them were affected at once. and they are heck lot of files
the screen shot has the total number of files affected .......

I still have the dreaded .ptl file extensions attached to many different kinds of files. (exe.ptl, jpeg.ptl, zip.ptl, obj.ptl .....) I am unable to restore these files back to their original file extensions using the memo program because I transferred (unbeknownst to me) the dreaded memeo .ptl files to a new external hard drive- Sold my old computer which had the original files on it(now wiped)- then loaded up my spanking new computer with my new useless memeo .ptl files from the external hard drive.
Yes, I know I can restore a pdf.ptl back to a .pdf file: (open with - adobe acrobat- then resave the pdf file- removing the .ptl extension) - But here is my question:
Is there a way to remove the .ptl file extension from exe.ptl, zip.ptl etc. ? (Using the method: open with....resaving does not work- AND I no longer have access to the original files)
I don't care what .ptl means- I don't want more information on why this occurred in the first place. I just want my files back!
I have talked to several well meaning support people both here and at memo, but I gave up after hearing many of the same suggestions that do not actually tell me how to solve this problem.
Am I still up the creek without a paddle- or is there a solution?
