I just bought the ThunderBolt Adaptor for my GoFlex Drive, even though $190 for an adaptor seems ridiculous to me. I bought it partly because I want the higher speed, and partly because I am considering upgrading to a MacBook Pro Retina, so I may be losing Firewire connectivity.

Despite the adaptor's enormous price tag, it doesn't include everything you need. So silly me for thinking $190 was ridiculous, because I guess I'm really going to have to spend $250. The ThunderBolt cable isn't included. Are you kidding me?

I admit that it does say this in tiny print on the side of the package that I didn't notice. So I guess technically you have me there. But in my opinion, this is sort of like selling someone a car and then saying, "The wheels aren't included. You should've checked the fine print." Although I guess I should've stood in the store all day scrutinizing the fine print, I think I made a reasonable assumption by thinking that it was a complete product.

Certainly not convenient, I agree with you there. It may have something to do with legal issues and what not between Apple wanting other companies (in this case, Seagate) being able to sell the cables and what not...that's my best guess. 

Apple can prove to be a little "fussy" sometimes over some of their stuff....

Just know what you're buying before you lay down the big bucks for something new...

I have a feeling that this whole thing might change later on...but that's just how it is for the time being, unfortunately. :/

Oh and just another comment on this...

The Apple store DOES have a drive they are selling that comes with the DRIVE, THUNDERBOLT ADAPTER, and CABLE. Tada! Problem solved. 

But just buying the adapater, make sure you remember the cable,

Thank you for the considerate reply, although to be fair you did kind of contradict yourself. By pointing out that there is a product that does include the cable, you have proven that Apple does not prohibit Seagate from including ThunderBolt cables with its products.

Regardless of the reason the cable is not included, in my opinion the adaptor without the cable should cost at most $50. Even then, you'd still be spending $100 just on cabling. A price of $190 is just ridiculous.

I'm starting to think that maybe the real problem is ThunderBolt itself. If you're a low-end user, you don't need it, and if you're a high-end pro user... you still don't need it. I guess ThunderBolt is just major overkill unless you are a high-level executive at ILM, and it is priced accordingly. So why is Apple including it on all Macs and phasing out Firewire on some models? As it stands, ThunderBolt is simply not a consumer-level product at all, but it is being sold like one.

Anyway, thanks for the help, but I returned the adaptor.

I contradict myself for the simple fact that AFTER my initial post, I was made aware of the product that comes with the cable...originally (as far as I was aware at the time) there wasn't a product available like that. So, meh on that, bit of a pointless thing, it still comes down to needing to do your research before you purchase a product and read the box beforehand Which I do....always. It's recommended.

It's apple's choice and thunderbolt has faster transfer rates..which comsumers are wanting...and frequently look for...then again it's an apple product and I've never known why they do stuff....and that's more of a question for Apple as to why they are forcing thunderbolt on consumers and phasing out firewire...

You also have to take note that this is a VERY NEW thing that JUST came out. Typically when something just comes out, the pricing is super high then it goes down...if you're patient, I'm sure the price tag will start being a little more acceptable...then again I have patience and no need to have the "latest and greatest" just to say I have it....
