Hey Wer110,
Did you ever get your drive fixed? Did SeaGate take care of you?

Well I thought I would try the drive once again in hopes that it would work. I put 50k worth of data on the drive and was only running 10.7.3 on my MBP, no other software installed. Boom errors galore, see below:

I'm afraid that I have to confim this problem.![]()
My setup: MacBook Air (purchased on August 2011) + OS X Lion 10.7.3 (with an "additional update" installed 12th March) + GoFlex Mac 1.5 TB
I have been using the drive for backups (Time Machine & other) and for storing large files (mostly audio and video) for a few months now.
I had the last Time Machine backup just a week ago, 12 March, and now the drive has stopped working. I can see the message "USB Connection GoFlex Mac" in HardwareGrowler, but the drive is not mounted. Disk Utility also shows the drive – all empty! ![]()
I'm not an expert with OS X, so I have little clue on how to diagnose this, but I tried to check some log files:
tail -f /var/log/system.log: Mar 20 19:48:15 Juhana-MacBook-Air diskarbitrationd[13]: unable to repair /dev/disk2s2 (status code 0x00000008).
tail -f /var/log/kernel.log: Juhana-MacBook-Air kernel[0]: 0 0 AppleUSBCDC: start - initDevice failed
After that, I tried to mount the drive with a PC with Windows 7 and a HFS4WIN driver (used successfully before), resulting in the machine crashing with blue screen (I didn't capture the details).
What has happened between last week (the last working mount) and today could be:
- using the drive in Windows with HFS4WIN for backing up about 30 GB of data, and/or
- a Lion software update (the additional update for 10.7.3 on 12th March)
Physically, the drive has been intact. After all, that's a reason why I bought an offline external storage at the first place - to protect data from the hazardous and mobile laptop life.

This issue is really serious, and I really, really hope that it is being rapidly diagnosed and fixed by the Seagate engineers.
What I'm looking at is not a way to get to the starting point with an empty drive (by formatting or such) but a way to access/recover the data as soon as possible. There is no way no recover the trust without recovering the data. Trust is what we pay for.
The least that I would expect is to hear whether this problem has been reproduced by Seagate and what is the prognosis for the case.

Just to add a few details:
- Seagate Drive Settings application doesn't recognize it
- the drive is connected via USB

Ok, now I have to back off a bit: the drive just mounted! I didn't do anything but wait (the cable connected for a long time), and now the drive is working again. What a relief!
But the question remains: what happened, and can the drive still be trusted?
If someone can interpret something from the logs, here goes:
kernel.log:
Mar 20 22:05:31 Juhana-MacBook-Air kernel[0]: jnl: disk1s2: journal start/end pointers reset! (jnl 0xffffff800bb60cc0; s 0x336b000 e 0x3bc2000)

Wer,
Anymore issues?

Well, I'll throw another log on this fire. I just bought (March 25, 2012) one of the 2TGoFlex drives for Mac (MBP bought Dec 2010 running OSX 10.6.8), did not install their package of diagnostic software. Initially mounted right up via firewire 800, did the TimeMachine backup succesfully. Tried again to run back up a few days later, wouldn't mount, but after unplugging/plugging in many times and rebooting the MBP many times, after just leaving it sit for a while (maybe an hour) it appeared....but seems to not stay awake long enough to do a very minimal backup update. Now again a few days later same thing...wouldn't mount, unplugged/replugged, restarted MBP a few times, still nothing, then left if alone for a while and it found the drive. I'm not nearly as technical as you all are, and I don't relish wasting time sorting this kind of thing out as I know none of you do either. Any news from the people from Seagate?? I've now got to go buy something else, I have a great Hitachi 1TG, and an older Seagate FlexDrive that works, but not enough capacity at this point. Seagate needs to get this fixed!!! Should I do a separate new item to add to the pile they can see?? I'll be watching this message thread closely. Hard to believe these guys would put this product out with such issues.

ok, quick update....just completed a successful TimeMachine backup, but now I'm worried about how to either dismount / turn off / put to sleep (i.e. close the lid) my Mac!!!!

I would indeed let SeaGate know about your issue. The more information you can provide the better off SeaGate will be in coming up with a solution. Sorry to hear that you are having issues.

I have a GoFlex 1T mobile external drive. It is USB 3 to USB 2.0 and I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.3 on an MBP. I don't have problems with it previously, until last week, It won't mount (directly connected to MBP USB). I don't know if it has something to do with the lastest update of OS X Lion 10.7.3. The weird thing is, i found out that if I connect it to MBP using my USB hub, it mounts. But unfortunately my usb hub was fell a few days ago and it is broken now. I tried a different hub but now it doesn't mount anymore.
I know it has nothing to do with the drive cable because when i connect it to a PC running Windows 7, it mounts, and it's working perfectly.
