Why there is no GoFlex Desk eSata adapter?

Any good reason?

It would be too fast?

Hmm,

I don't see eSata upgrade kits for GoFlex Desk.

Do you?

I'm so sorry, I gave you the wrong information in the last post.   :smileysurprised:

You're right, there's no eSATA kit available for the GoFlex Desk

Could there be one in one day?

Could you ask from Seagate's R&D?

I'd see more use for faster & native connection for desktops as 3.5" hdd's are much bigger, than laptops and portable 2.5" hdd's.

Re: Why there is no GoFlex Desk eSata adapter?

I talked to our engineers about this, and there won't be an eSATA module for the GoFlex Desk drive.

The reason behind it is that eSATA is an older and slower interface, compared to USB3.0.

Very bad engineering decision from Seagate and also based on a bad argument.

A hard disk inside an usb3 enclosure uses SATA to connect the enclosure and therefore can't be any faster than the SATA connection.

eSATA connection connects straight to the SATA connection, so it is as fast as SATA, therefore as fast as hdd and finally therefore as fast as usb3 connected to the same hdd.

eSATA allows user to monitor hdd's S.M.A.R.T data, which Seagate as hdd manufacturer should enforce.

By monitoring smart, the user can replace Your product, when it gets faulty, before they lose their data.

For not supporting eSATA Seagate will have more angry customers, who lose their data, when your hdd breaks down.

And let's face it: all hdd's breaks down someday. But maybe you just rather sell multiple hdd's as backup, for surprising breakdowns.

And if you'd like to be very smart, you could even use eSATAp.

Afterall (e)SATA(p) is the native way to speak to your hdd. There's no better or faster than the native way. All the others just need conversions, which add overhead, power consumption and slows your communication.

In that case why make a USB2 interface as it is even older and slower?  Could it be that the vast majority of user devices will have a USB2 interface and quite a few have an eSata interface.

Why make an eSata adapter cable for the 2.5" portable drives in the Seagate GoFlex range and not the larger 3.5" Desk drives?  A strange omission by the largest manufacturer of hard drives I would say

I bought two of the 3TB external 'Desk' drives (STAC3000200) and two eSata cables before I realised they were not compatible.  Despite having some fairly recent hardware, not one of them has a USB3 port on them, nor does either of my expensive NAS units for which the drives were bought with the intention of being backup drives to the 3TB XT drives inside.

Have your engineers tried moving a terabyte of more data over USB2?  Considering the low market uptake of USB3 (even now), the eSata connection is far more common but is not supported on the larger capacity drives.

Could you submit a request to R&D that they reconsider producing an eSata adapter for the Desk range?  I would buy them without any hesitation and no doubt so would 'toke_lahti'...

+1 for eSATA for GoFlex Desk.

Although I prefer the Seagate brand because of the past reputation, I would go for Western Digital if they offered a 4TB Desktop drive with an eSATA or with a 5 year warranty like Seagate used to offer before (lowering warranty somewhat hints at the waning confidence of your company in your own products whatever reason is officially given).

It's totally illogical to have an eSATA(p) for portable drives and not for Desktop drives because eSATAp port is by far more common than USB 3.0 port and will remain so for at least next 2-5 years.

P.S: Please remove the floral background in your messages. It makes it very hard to read your messages on that background (at least on Chrome).

Re: Why there is no GoFlex Desk eSata adapter?

I agree. There definetly shoudl be an esata adapter and I would buy it in a heartbeat. I feel like I wasted $100 buying this product and I can't even connect it to my dvr to expand its space because my goflex desk drive doesn't have an esata connector. I asked tech support about this and they told me that it was supposed to come out in march, but I guess the guy lied to me because it never came out. I called later this year and they told me they aren't even working on it. That's really ridiculous. PLEASE MAKE AN ESATA ADAPTER!!!!!!!
