Re: can't connect freeagent go flex and get beeping noise

Hello:
Please try our external drive troubleshooter - http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/troubleshooting_assistance/

If the troubleshooter doesn't resolve your problem, could you please post the report from Microsoft's UVCView utility?
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/UVCView.x86.exe (This utility is from one of our forum's most prolific and helpful users - fzabkar.)

Thanks!

Any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: can't connect freeagent go flex and get beeping noise

ive had my 1.5 t free agent go flex for about a month an half.  everything has been going well.  i have almost over a terr of space filled with with my documents and mostly movies.  Now out of no where it is beeping as well and not even synching up to my computer.  I am shocked becuase I am taking a trip to singapore for 3 months and have all my travel media and materials i need on this go flex.  Have you found out anything in which to fix the beeping matter?  I am sure it is some sort of error beep within the device,  but should be easy to fix since i had done no damage to the unit itself inside or outside.  The only thing i have done is plug it into my new computer (64 bit) after that it stopped working.  please advise if you found anything out.

Re: can't connect freeagent go flex and get beeping noise

Do not buy Seagate products, especially their hard drives. I purchased this product about 7 months ago and a couple days ago all it does is have a faint beeping sound and no computer will recognise it. After researching online, this is a common flaw with Seagate's quality control, leaving your data in jeopardy! Many have complained about this online and Seagate charges between $700-$2500 to get your data back. This is a crock because its marketed as a product you can use to backup your files. I called support and they told me they have quality products, but how can they say that if their hard drives fail in just a few months! They told me that is the way hard drives are, that its a matter of when they will fail, not if. I told them they should notify potential buyers then about this but they said its just common knowledge. Right! I have old hard drives that are 10 years old still running strong. They will replace the physical hard drive, but wont recover the files, which is the important thing, as there are photos, data, files that can't be replaced. They also told me if I am using it as a backup I should keep a copy of all files on my computer and a second copy on the portable hard drive. So basically they want you to keep 3TB of space open on your computer so that WHEN your Seagate product fails you will have your files backed up. Kinda defeats the purpose of getting a 3TB portable storage system. Also pretty scammy that they sell the hard drive, then also own the hard drive data recovery service so when it fails they can get you with a $1000+ recovery fee. Sounds like a scheme to me. I recommend you stay away from Seagate products, as their quality is sub par and their customer service is equal to that. Read the rest of these reviews and watch Seagate as they try to save face by replying and acting concerned.

Re: can't connect freeagent go flex and get beeping noise

Its funny how the admin's keep posting to use this utility, Microsoft's UVCView utility, yet when people post the results you never see any responds. Looks like its their way to like they are trying to help when its just thier way to shut people up for a while.

Re: can't connect freeagent go flex and get beeping noise

froze mine overnight in a ziplock bag, connected next morning and still beeping, in a last ditch effort while it was plugged into the wall, connected to laptop, and still beeping I banged the side with the palm of may hand, no change, banged the next side, no change, banged another side, no change, banged the last side and the hard drive spun up and began working... I'll post again if it stops working

Re: can't connect freeagent go flex and get beeping noise

They have a problem with their USB cables. I work at a business where we handle a lot of hard drives, by borrowing a cable from a different hard drive I am able to get them to connect. I have experienced the same problems with them not connecting, not being recognized, and sometimes beeping on both Mac and Windows machines. Using a different cable has always resulted in immediate and normal hard drive functionality. Hope that helps you.

It is an USB problem and it is not

Hello

I bought the USB Gofex drive about 2 months ago.

It always worked fine on different computers on different operating systems and on my LG television....

...until yesterday in the middle of a file copy operation it began to beep and the USB device disappeared suddenly.

It happens while reading and while writing.

And it happens that it does not happen at all.

For testing I'm copying a 6 Gigabyte file from external to internal harddisk and vice versa.

Sometimes it beeps and aborts at 10%, sometimes it beeps at 80% and sometimes the file is copied with success.

The fact that the USB device disappears makes me think that it is a USB problem.

The fact that I hear that beeping sound makes me think that it might be a drive problem.

Someone wrote above that it is a cable problem.

I'm using that same cable that worked fine for 2 months.

That is very strange.

But I tried another USB cable.
Now I use the short cable that came with the device and suddenly it works fine!

So what is that ?

Is it a cable problem or not ?

I don't know.

My theory is that the device needs a lot of current and if the cable is not plugged perfectly it suffers from not enough voltage in the device and the device executes a reset which obvisouly makes the USB device disappear.

I should buy the SATA adapter to check if the same happens with SATA.

For all those who cannot read their data anymore:

I don't think that your data is lost.
1.) First try the shortest USB cable that you have.

2.) Try connecting via a USB hub that has a powerfull current supply.

3.) Try connecting via SATA.

Yes it is sad that there is nobody answering here from Seagate.

But this forum is not the support.

But even the support is not helpfull in the majority of the companies today.

People buy the cheapest products and so cannot expect that companies spend much money into a well trained support team (which is very expensive!)

But I have to say that I don't have bad experiences with Seagate up to now.

Seagate was always the company that gave more warrenty than all the others (3 years in Germany)
