Hi, I plugged in the 3 TB USB 3.0 drive and opted not to install the extra software. I'm using Windows 7.0 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1, 8GB RAM and near-empty 500GB internal drive. I tried to do an Image Backup and it failed. I tried a few more times with the same result.

Then I took the USB drive back to Fry's and got a new replacement. No change. The error dialog picture is in the attachment, but for the record the text is:

The backup failed.

One of the backup files could not be created. (0x8078002A)

Additional Information:

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. (0x8007045D)

I then formatted the disk, repeated the experiment and got the same result.

I'm checking to see if there is a workaround or fix because I've known and trusted the Seagate brand for decades and can't believe that Seagate would ship junk.

So how can I get this to work without installing the software? I expect it to plug and play with Windows  7 as it stands.

We are having the same problem here, on Windows 7 64 bit and Windows Server 2008 R2 machines with multiple GoFlex 3TB drives.

I have tried setting up the drives as GPT with a single 3TB partition, as GPT with 2 1.5 TB partitions and as MBR with 1 2TB partition and have the same result.  Windows Server 2008 R2 indicates that there has been an IO error.

Any help available for this?

same problem here.  I want to create an image of my c drive of windows 7 - 32 bit...simple enough.

at first I thought it might be the new USB 3.0 card, so I plugged it into the USB 2.0...same error...Event ID 517...I/O error.

Then I thought, well, let me unplug all the other drives and just boot to C drive and try...same error.

Then I thought, well, let me format the Seagate 3TB drive and try again....same error.

It will let me copy files over...but not create an image...which is why I purchased it in the first place.

If it cannot be resolved by the weekend, I will go with a Western Digital...I hear they are working with Windows 7 backup.

This is to report that I tried to do an Image Backup again, but from another computer, this time an HP netbook but also running Windows 7.

It failed in the same way.

Nope won't work with Western Digital USB 3 - 3.0 TB drives either - same error.

Tried two computers running Windows Server 2008 R2 datacenter edition, both gave the same error until i found a smaller external drive.

I have a Seagate 2.5" 500GB GoFlex drive and also recieve the same Event ID 517 I/O error.

I ran the following command:

FSUTIL FSINFO NTFSINFO <drive>

..and found that I have 4096 Bytes per sector and 4096 Bytes per cluster (4k/4k).

It appears Windows backup has problems writing VHD files to a 4K Native drive.

Regarding these drives MS states -

"Not supported as of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Microsoft is conducting an investigation into the feasibility of supporting these kinds of disks in the future and will issue the necessary KB articles when it is appropriate." see - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982018

I also have another 500GB Seagate Goflex connected to a Server 2008 R2 machine and it works fine, the only difference appears to be the "Bytes per Sector" size, which is 512. I think most new Seagate GoFlex 3TB drives are 4k/4k.

Western Digital have a utility that changed the Bytes per sector size on the 4k/4k drives so that it works for backup (but kills XP access). Does anyone know of a seagate version? http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6618/session/L3RpbWUvMTMxMzUzNzc5My9zaWQvT1hrMSpJQms... 

It does not look like MS will be supporting these drives in 2008/Win7.

"SBS 2011 is based on Windows 2008 R2 Server. Backup uses VHD (Virtual hard disk) format to store the data. The 4k Sector support is not available for VHD in Windows 2008 & R2 (VHD cannot be created on 4k sector size disks). Hence backup cannot provide support for 4k disks.

In Windows 8, a new VHDX format is created that supports > 2 TB data storage and 4k sector disks. Therefore only in Win8 the backup is supporting 4k sector disks.

When the Win8 based SBS systems will be launched then you can expect support for 4k."

Bingo!  Me too.  have an HP CMT 8000 Elite running Windows 7 64 bit and connected a Seagate USB 3TB drive. 

Having windows image backup fail.  Gone to Windows Backup, Create a Disk Image, Selected all the System, OS and Data drives, then tried backing up to the Seagate GoFlex drive.  Received errors 'One of the Backup files could not be created '0x8078002A'' with 'Additional Information: The Request could not be performed because of an device I/O error '0x8007045D''

Judging by this thread it appears to be the 4k/4k byte size of the external drive.

So Seagate, kindly asking if there is a fix?  Asap?

Got a response to an email sent to Seagate support:

"Unfortunately ,we don't support Windows backup because it's not a Seagate product .It's Microsoft's.But if if you are interested in doing an image backup for your computer ,we can offer you "DiskWizard" software which we support."

Disc Wizard is freely avaible to download to Seagate customers.  Doesn't help with Windows Backup but does give a workaround to create a disk image.  Easy to download, install, reboot then away you go.

I have discovered that if you remove the USB adapter and plug the hard drive directly into SATA, repartition and format, it works with windows backup. This seems to confirm what I have read elsewhere, that the drive is normally formatted with 512 byte clusters and the USB adapter emulates 4k clusters. I guess this gives better compatibility with windows xp. When the drive is reattached with the USB adpter, it fails to recognize the partition, if one was made directly thru SATA.

Please, Seagate, make a method for fixing this. From what I have seen, Western Digital has. It does not seem like too much to ask for windows backup compatibility
