I have my GoFlex setup nicely on my network and been working nicely for over a year. Decided to back it up via adding an external USB drive to the USB port on the GoFlex. I can see and access the default folder on the drive, but can not add files or do anything on the drive. It says I must ask permission to do this function, and the only option at that prompt is "ok". I tried messing with the permissions to no avail saying access is denied.
I can plug the USB drive directlyinto my computer and it works just fine with no issues whatsoever.
Any ideas how to use this drive when plugged into the GoFlex directly?

How are you accessing the External Storage? Is this in Windows File Explorer, the Seagateshare web Application, Dashboard or some other way?
You need to use your Goflex Home user account credentials to access the drive. You can't change permisssions from a connected computer because the drive is on a Network device. - think of it as another computer on your network.

Ah, that may explain it.
I am accessing it through Windows Explorer, but I was also through the Dashboard.
When trying to copy files through Seagate share, it says it can not access the server.
So how do I copy my files?

I don't use the dashboard; it causes more problems than it solves. It is really just a launcher for the Memeo software and you don't need it.
And I also advise against large file transfers through the seagateshare web app. Other users and myself have experienced problems where the drive fills to capacity but no files are visible.
I really recommend using Windows File Explorer for file management, though the seagateshare web app is useful for sharing.
But here's a link to the Seagate troublsehooting guide http://support.seagate.com/kbimg/flash/215555/2155
And a link to mapping drives manually http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/21
Also check in Seagateshare web Preferences> Administration> Storage Device(s) that the drive is mounted properly, it should show as Active. The External Storage folder will show up anyway in Explorer and the web app but it will be empty otherwise.
