Apple Time machine

So I installed the time machine setup software and everything worked out but when Time Machine goes to make the backup it gives me this error message

"The backup disk image “/Volumes/ComputersBackup$-1/David-Hassars-MacBook-Pro_c42c030ca651.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."

I was trying to do this via wifi, should I be connecting physically to the drive, and if so, in which way?

Also checking the .sparsebundle location in the disk utility the disk status is "Disk Write Status :    Not mounted, Read-only" this a good thing or a bad thing?

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Apple Time machine

I also successfully installed ATM setup software was also successful on initial backup.  However, the next scheduled backup (scheduled hourly) was unsuccesful with the following similar error message:

"The backup disk image “/Volumes/ComputersBackup$-2/Jonathan Cortess-MacBook-Pro_c8bcc89692de.sparsebundle” is already in use."

I receive the above message every time I attempt to to restart back-up.

I noticed that you had not received a reply on your inquiry.  Were you able to resolve your issue?

Re: Apple Time machine

It is all very dissapointing

I got both of my macs backing up to the goflex Drive using apple time machine after about several hours and many attempts.

To my horror, after about 3 months that the backups were working correctly, for no reason at all, all backups have now failed. I have repaired the GFH disk using disk utility (as suggested), but, it still refuses to complete the back ups.

So I am stuck with a drive that wont accept Time machine back ups any more.

Another problem with the drive is that although the media sharing works very well (when its working), for some unknown reason I have to log in and unshare log out and then log back in and set media sharing to - share again about twice a week.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Re: Apple Time machine

Thanks, Keith.  Your comment added to the validation that the GFH is extremely unstable and unreliable.  I now feel comfortable on my decision to return the devise for full refund after 5 days of unsuccessful attempts to set this up properly.

It's time that Seagate be transparent on these issues- particularly with regards to ATM back-up integration and not have to point fingers to Apples' back-up system.

Can anyone make a recommendation of other non-Seagate network drives that confidently serves its purpose?

Re: Apple Time machine

I have the GFH 2 TB and I'm very pleased with the performance of it with Time Machine. My 2 Macs are backed up every hour over the air with Time Machine. I noticed 1 thing though (perhaps you are already aware of) and I don't know if it has something to do with your issue but just in case : When TM makes a backup, it mounts the "Go Flex Backup" disk in the finder. After the backup is completed, the software automatically unmount that drive. However, when you access Time Machine to restore a file for example, clicking the TM icon will mount the "Go Flex Backup" drive in the finder but when you quit Time Machine, the drive is not automatically unmounted. You must manually unmount it in order for the next backups to be done. Last thing, apparently wireless backup with Time Machine doesn't play well with sleep mode. When you run a backup, you must ensure that your computer won't go to sleep (by closing the laptop lid for example). This will apparently corrupt the sparsebundle image. I also made sure to enable the option to prevent TM of running backup when running on battery.

Re: Apple Time machine

On the one hand, I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in these problems. On the other, having not yet been able to complete even my initial Time Machine back-up, it's disheartening to hear that, if I could, this problem may still crop up again, months later. In following the installation disk's instructions, everything seemed to work fine for me, and Time Machine back-up started. A day and half later, after having gotten through about 2/3 of the 500GB I'm trying to back up, I unfortunately had an unrelated power failure in my home. Since powering everything back up, my Mac can't seem to spot the GFH in Finder. I've gone back through the installation disk procedures, including resetting the GFH, but there's still no indication of the GFH popping up on my desktop. When it comes time to configure Time Machine, I receive a similar error to that described above: The backup disk image “/Volumes/ComputersBackup$/NBSigns-Laptop_00254bca8230.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1). Nothing more to be done, near as I can tell. Maybe Time Machine backing up is not my problem, and there's some earlier stage at which I need to address this, but Time Machine backing up is the only reason I bought this drive. Please, HELP! It's doubly disheartening that there's been no helpful response yet, from Seagate, to this topic. I don't know how to parse all the topics to find what specifically I should be asking about, or what I should try next. I've just about run out of the total number of hours I want to dedicate to this. I guess I'll try emailing Seagate directly? Does that accomplish anything? Does a wireless, Mac-accessible, large, local storage device exist in the marketplace? I thought it might, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Re: Apple Time machine

I have spent many hours trying to get the ATM backups working properly, they seem to work OK for a while then all of a sudden - back up delayed error 45 or some other problem.

I have to say that the GFH works really well for media sharing through my TV via DLNA and the ATM backups for my 2 Macs also work well (when it is all working OK) so, in the back of my mind I am always slightly worried that I will open up my Mac one day and that all my ATM backups need to be done again - ARGH!!!!

So I am going to buy Super Duper to carry out my Mac backups, Super duper claims to be able to work alongside ATM, so I am going to give it a try so that I can get peace of mind.

Having said all of that, Seagate have released an update to the GFH software, so I would suggest installing the update as required before you give up.

Also, go to -Applications- Goflex Home Desktop applications and hit the Computersbackup icon.

Follow the on screen instructions and pay attention to the ATM walkthrough instructions to set up/re-set your ATM backups.

Also, I have found that it has helped to re-boot the GFH drive occasionally and in particular before seting up a brand new ATM backup.

Regards

Keith

Re: Apple Time machine

Been having same issues, can get all setup up and see drive in time machine over the network, but when it starts to back up getting a failed message "the backup disk image could not be mounted".   Can access network share of GoFlex Home, the setup seem easy.  I have two Macs and both get same error.  I see the goflex drive in the disk utility.  I am connected to the shared folders on the Golfex

Any help or should I revert back to individual USB drives for backup.

Thanks for all the previous info, seems like a lot of issues getting this to work correctly.

Re: Apple Time machine

It has happened to me as well a couple of times.

Set up one Mac at a time, go to Applications, Goflexhome desktop folder and  select Computers Backup application.

Follow the Time machine instructions carefully !!- it will reconfigure your ATM backups on your Goflexhome(GFH) drive.

I also read that sometimes allowing your Mac to sleep for long periods can sometimes corrupt the backups!

Another tip is to re-boot the goflex home drive when some of these quircky issues crop up.

All in all for the price! the GFH works very well, there are teething problems, but, it is worth sticking with it!!

Oh, and dont forget to upgrade the GFH to the latest software upgrade!

Re: Apple Time machine

Is there any way to start over, deleting the GFH completetly to reset up directory name and passwords.  When I go to the GFH home server and log on, and select computer storage and try and format it show it as NTFS or FAT32. no Mac formats, so is this my problem?

Or should I buy the Apple Time Capsule since my router is wireless G?  Can kill two birds with one stone.
