Base won't recognize 2nd GoFlex Drive

I have a 2TB GoFlex Home and an external 3TB GoFlex drive.  My original Home drive crashed within 3 months of having it so Seagate sent a replacement drive and base.  I can't get the new base to recognize that the 2nd drive is even connected to the base via USB.  It will notice an 80GB SSD drive when I connect it, but this 3TB drive isn't recognized.  It doesn't say something is connected but unreadable.

The drive is readable when connected to another computer.

The latest Firmware is installed on the base unit.

The 3TB has been reformated, I wanted it to be writable by a Mac, which won't write to a 3TB NTFS partition, but the GoFlex Home doesn't recognize ext fat so I reformated as NTFS.

Any ideas? This had worked fine with my previous base.

Re: Base won't recognize 2nd GoFlex Drive

I am having a similar issue and I believe it is becasue the 3TB drive is formatted as GPT and not MBR. If I connect my external USB 3TB drive to my GoFlex Home's usb port as GPT it will not see the drive. If I format the drive as MBR it will only allocate 2.2 TB of drive space and the GoFlex will see the drive.

I am currently trying to see if I can format the drive with multiple MBR partions but so far no luck with the GoFlex home seeing all the partions, it only sees the primary.

Re: Base won't recognize 2nd GoFlex Drive

I thought of that but it worked with the original base that I had bought so either the OS in the bases are different (though it was updated to the latest version) or the reformating of the drive caused it to stop working, neither of which should since it's an external drive and you aren't required to use a Seagate drive to plug into the external port on the back.

I've decided I extremely unhappy with this drive setup and company with the fiascos going on regarding the exchange.  Since I didn't call to inform a warranty agent that the drive was opened by a certified data recovery company, Drivesavers, and their RMA site doesn't say to call, they rejected my warranty claim and will be charging me for the advanced drive they sent out.  However, they will be so kind to give me an exception since I didn't call and they may refund it after they get the drive back again.

With all that, and the drive failing within 3 months of buying it, I think I'll stick with WD drives which only failed on me after years of use and abuse, not months of sitting on a desk and being moved around rarely.

Re: Base won't recognize 2nd GoFlex Drive

Try preparing the 3TB drive with DiscWizard to have its full capacity accessible when it's connected to the GoFlex Home.

Let me know how this works out.

Re: Base won't recognize 2nd GoFlex Drive

Thanks, that at least takes care of the issue of the 3TB drive not being recognized by the GoFlex Home Base, but still very disappointed with Seagate: snippiness of the warranty agent, drive failing after 3 months (as I was backing it up since it was on the road for 9 weeks of that 3 months), lack of direction to increase my costs, etc.

Re: Base won't recognize 2nd GoFlex Drive

I tried using the using DiscWizard to make the full capacity accessible but when I try using Extend Capacity the DiscWizard states that there are no drives available to extend. The tutorial shows how to setup the drive as a OS drive (internal) does this operation work with external drives and if so what am I doing wrong?

[ Edited ]

It gave me that same message and I just ignored it.  If you select the 3TB drive and tell it to use the MBR Option to partition the drive it worked on it just fine.  Windows 7 has the ability to recognize the larger drives without needing to extend it so it might give you that message since on that computer it doesn't need it.

And yes, I did it on an external drive, just select the right one in the list of available drives.  Seems like mine said it was a USB drive when I did it.
