The GoFlex Home product worked reasonable well for a month or two but then stated to become unreliable. Somtimes the Dashboard would connect to the drive, sometimes not. Now it seems to have failed completely.
The Dashboard reports "The storage unit is not connected to the GoFlex device"
First of all, the storage unit IS the Goflex device. What idiot programmer came up with this message.
The directions to use the drive without the flaky Dashboard are of course inaccurate and will not work. There have been no changes to my firewall, however, i tried disabling it to no avail.
Anyone know how I can connect to a GoFlex Home external drive in any way (cable or over my wireless network) so I can get my data off this unreliable crud and onto a fully developed network hard drive system?

I'd argue the storage unit is NOT the Goflex device, the storage unit is the disk drive. The GF Home base unit can be active without a disk plugged in, so the message may be indicating that the Dashboard can see the GF Home on the network but cannot find any folders to connect to because it hasn't mounted the disk drive. It's possible the disk drive has failed. Is the disk seated properly in the base unit, and are the blue and white lights on? Can you see the GF Home on your network?
I have several Windows XP and Windows 7 PCs connecting to my GF home with no problems. None of them use the dashboard as it's not necessary.
What instructions have you tried which are inaccurate? Have you tried the "map network drive" option from Windows Explorer?
Alternatively here's an example command line I use to set up the mapped drive in Windows 7 (assuming the GF Home user name is "myuser" and the password is "mypassword"):
net use x: "\\goflex_home\Goflex Home Public" mypassword /user:myuser /persistent:yes
You don't have to map a drive letter in order to access the GF Home, you can simply find it under "Network" and click on it to get to the folders. You will be asked to enter the user name and password, unless you've set up the GF Home user and password to be the exactly the same as your Windows credentials in which case it should connect automatically.

Well since you're talking about the Goflex Home then the storage unit is NOT the Goflex device, so maybe it isn't the programmer who is an idiot after all.
The Goflex Home is a minicomputer with its own flash RAM and Linux operating system. It can have one or more storage devices attached to it (or none, but then it's not much use). What the message is telling you is that while the dashboard can find the goflex device it can't find the attached storage.
On the other hand, the dashboard software is crud and you are better off without it. Even the Seagate troubleshooting guide ends up suggesting running without it.
As ntpntpntp says, you can do everything you need to do without the dashboard software.
If you enter //goflex_home/ into a browser address bar, you can access the seagateshare interface to do all the dashboard stuff.
edit: Is the drive connected to the base properly? On the front of the device there are two lights. The bottom one should show solid white if the drive is ready. (The top one shows when the goflex home base unit is ready)
