Just gave GFH a static IP address and that's increased wireless N to 4.7 read and 3 write which I'm more than happy with as it brings my PS3 back into the streaming game.
I think there may be a firmware issue with my router because as you said the read write speeds really shouldn't have been affected by changing the port.
