Will this be addressed in a firmware update? Most other NAS manufacturers have had to upgrade their version of nettalk to work with Apple.

I just purchased the Goflex home today and have the gold master of Lion (I am a developer) and same problem - apparently the Goflex Home doesn't support AFP properly in its new implementation. If I don't hear anything in the next couple of days that a fix is in the works, back it goes. ![]()
Has anyone with OS X Lion (10.7) figured how to make this work or will it take a firmware update (or is that even possible)?
Thanks!

I am looking forward to upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion by the end of July, when Apple say they will release Lion. If the GFH drive will not work with Lion then I will use a different drive to hold the Time Machine backups. I'd prefer to continue to use the GFH but if it won't work with Lion then I have no choice; the OS upgrade is more important to me than the use of the GFH.

Well it will be interesting to see how this plays out. It seems that virtually all of the NAS manufacturers are affected bythisproblem. Most have been silent about the incompatibility. Like you, the OS upgrade is more important than the backup device. I will bit the bullet and purchase a 3TB time capsule after taking back the GFH. However, I would prefer not to do so. Would someone from Seagate please respond? Thanks!

I think that it will be better to buy an Apple Time Capsule than to wait for a firmware change that permits the continuing use of a Seagate GFH by Time Machine. Apple have a great incentive to make Time Capsule compatible to OS X Lion's Time Machine. Seagate have to make GFH support a wide variety of OSs and I appreciate that this is a challenge. Obtaining a refund on my GFH drive that is three months old and that worked for those three months will, I fear, be difficult.

It's a tough call. I retired my Windows Home Server (WHS) for the GFH because of this very issue and I thought it was overkill to do a hardware upgrade for the new version of WHS. I purchased the GFH based on, what I presumed was, guarantee compatibility with Time Machine. Considering that 10.7 has been in the works for months, developers have known for a long time about this issue - particularly those manufacturing linux-based NAS's who comply with AFP standards. I have a couple of weeks before I have to return the device but, considering that it sounds as though Lion will be formally released tomorrow, I hope we will hear something from Seagate and other OEM's. Up until now they've been able to say that they can't comment on support for unreleased products but that will go up in smoke within the next few days.

I just got bit by this...I just updated to 10.7 and now cannot connect to be GFH for Time Machine. Hopefully this is only a short term headache...especially since I just got my GFH working reliably with 10.6.

Is this how you set it up?

That is exactly how I tried to set it up after the usual way did not work. This problem specifically arises out of changes that Apple have made to the protocol used for communicating with time machine in 10.7 and it is affecting pretty much all non-Apple network storage devices which used to be compatible with Time Machine (or for which workaround could be created to make it work). Could you consult with Seagate and find out when an update will be available? Thanks!
