I have been using xbmc which is a mediaplayer, but it requires me to have my pc on, so i got a GoFlex home.
Now in xbmc in the UpNp part, your are able to make shortcuts between folders and files, eks:
if i bought the movie "The hungergames" i could put it in a folder in my public part of the GoFlex home, so i would be able to acces it via. UpNp from my phone or tv.
So lets say it's like this in the public folder:
videos/film/tilte/the hungergames/the hungergames.avi
but i at the same time wanted it to be accessed from this folder, without having it in this folder:
video/film/genre/action/the hungergames/the hungergames.avi
and also this folder:
video/film/year/2012/the hungergames/the hungergames.avi
so it will only be laying in the "title" folder, but i could browse it trough the "genre" and "year" folder aswell, is it possible to make such a sortcut, or will i just have to live with an unorganized media library.

I think what you are trying to do requires saving metadata for the video files, so they can be sorted by genre, year etc.
The Goflex Home runs a minidlna service to stream media. I think minidlna supports metadata, it seems to for music files, but adding metadata to video files isn't so straightforward. To be honest I haven't looked into it too much because I only have movies that I like on my Goflex Home, which is a limited set of genres, so searching by title works for me.
Take a look here first for info about minidlna config http://www.openstora.com/wiki/index.php?title=Mini
You could also google minidlna and metadata
