Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

I just tried to setup GoFlex Home on my laptop running Windows 8.  It says operating system not supported.  Do you know when this will change?  Microsoft just RTM'd Windows 8 on 8/1/2012 right?

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

I'm pretty sure the Goflex Home works with Windows 8  and that it is just the dashboard software that is not compatible.

You do not need the dashboard software.

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

Any news from Seagate on plans to make Dashboard and Memeo Backup Windows 8 compliant? As stated by SamH, the Win8 RTM occured 3 weeks ago, and although there are workarounds, I would expect these two products to be updated very soon.

As a side note, I'm using the Win8 File History backup capabilities with hard-mapped GoFlex Home drives, and it's working flawlessly.

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

Just curious, why would you even care about Seagate Dashboard compatibility with Win8?

The Dashboard is made for people that don't have much of a clue about computers and don't want to learn and I'm pretty sure that's not you.

Same with Memeo Instant backup (which isn't a Seagate product).

It's like Dave Zabriskie asking when will training wheels be compatible with Felt bicycles.

ps Mac OS has been around for quite a while and Dashboard doesn't work with that (afaik). Perhaps the question should be when will Windows evolve to the point that "hand-holding 3rd party software" isn't necessary? I haven't used Win 8 so I'm still optimistic that it is sufficiently easy to use that the dashboard is unnecessary for any users.

pps no offence to anyone that uses the Dashboard. But if you are having problems try just using Windows without it.

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

Without Seagate software how do you register a new device with Windows 8?

I must be one of those to stupid to figure it out since my GoFlex Home device will not be discoverable in my network unless I use the Seagate interface to make it discoverable.

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

I want to be able to use the dashboard to reconnect to the device when I need to. It is a necessary program in my opinion and Seagate should be a lot quicker in updating the op. Sys. Software.

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

@millsdan - maybe you're right. The link I posted previously shows how to set up without the dashboard.Try turning on Network Discovery if the GFH isn't showing up in your network (otherwise the firewall will block it).

I haven't used Windows 8 yet (I've got it on order) but I am100% sure that networking is possible without 3rd party software. All the dashboard software does is automate the steps that you might need to do manually without it, like configuring your firewall.

It also provides links, for example to the web interface so that instead of having to open a browser and type goflex_home into the address bar, you just click a link.

Seriously, if you really need that then maybe a NAS is not for you. I use my GFH with win XP, Win 7, Ubuntu, and Android  all without the dashboard.

@162 - wanting something and it being necessary aren't the same. If you just want it then you'll have to wait for Seagate and from experience that is going to take a while.

Seagate is apparently aware that Windows 8 exists as it is featured on their site for the Backup Plus drive. Then again, they know Mac OS exists but haven't created a dashboard for Mac (or Linux or Android).  Windows users are "special".

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

I'm with you. The backup program worked great before. I didn't have to think about it. The Dashboard would display indicating that everything was working fine. I can't figure out how to manually back up the files. It's a real pain.

Re: Windows 8 and GoFlex Home

Memeo Instant Backup is made by a different company (Memeo). There is no mention of windows 8 on their website.
If it is any consolation (it probably isn't) it is not just Seagate customers that have this problem.

The good news is that Windows 8 File History backup probably makes Memeo redundant.
