"Invalid IP configuration" message since setting up PPTP

I followed the steps to set up direct access to my GoFlex Home remote storage from my laptop. I successfully unblocked the four ports. However, although I am able to connect to wifi/Internet at home, when I took the laptop to a shopping mall and attempted to connect to their wifi, I got a message that my IP config was invalid. I connected, but with only limited access--no Internet. Since I had no problems before, this must be due to the changes I made to the settings. How is this fixed?

I bet you comfigured you laptop for static IP for home use, them you tried to goto the mall, and use the same IP configuration for the wirfi there.

At public Wifi connection need to be dynamic.

They should change the procedures then...I thought the point of the changes was to speed up remote access, as in, accessing your files quickly when you're away from home. Oh well, I'll go ahead and change it back. Will that affect the ports I unblocked any?

I don;t think you are getting what I'm saying.

Invalid IP configuration.... I'm assuming that you laptop is saying this when you are at the mall.

That being the case, has nothing to do with the router or GFH.

ARgggg.

Sorry I'm frustrating you so much. My point is that I had no trouble connecting anywhere UNTIL I FOLLOWED THE PROCEDURES TO UNBLOCK THE PORTS. If you want to be helpful, tell me what you think I might have done wrong following those procedures. I thought the whole point of unblocking the ports was to allow direct remote access through the internet with your GoFlex Home no matter where you were or whose wifi you were connected to.

Re: "Invalid IP configuration" message since setting up PPTP

In other words...did I make a mistake and give the laptop a static IP configuration. I thought I had selected the GoFlex Home for that. Arrggg. Never mind. If nobody wants to assist and instead wants to offer snark, I'll try to figure it out myself.

Let us know what operating system you have, we may be able to offer concrete assistance that way.  djcalcutt's assumption is the one I would initially go with as well, so you should google "how to set my ip dynamic with <operating system version here>" and go from there.

Cheers,

Re: "Invalid IP configuration" message since setting up PPTP

Hi GreggLD,

opening the ports on the router on your home LAN will not affect how your laptop connects to other wifi networks. Similarly, your GFH configuration will not affect  how your laptop connects to other wifi networks.

What djcalcutt is suggesting is that it is likely that you have set your laptop to use a static IP and this is causing problems when you try to connect to other wifi networks. Public wifi networks like to issue IP addresses on their network and may have a completely different addressing scheme to your home network.

This is a separate issue with how you have configured your laptop and has nothng to do with the procedures to unblock the ports. If you could connect before with no trouble but can't now then that is a coincidence due to additional changes to your laptop.

The procedures to unblock the ports and set up remote access do not require changes to your laptop. They require changes to your router and GFH configuration.

Check if your laptop is set to use a static IP - you haven't mentioned what OS your laptop uses, so I can't give more specific information on how to do that.
