Anyone Else Not Able to Do a Thing With Their Satellite?

Ok so I was so looking forward to this device. Picked it up from Best Buy after waiting forever for it to ship. I bring it home, install the stuff it says to install including the iOS application on my iPad.  Install the Mac OS X stuff and did not reformat the drive.

Now, I should be able to do one of two things....either A) Drag and Drop files/folders directly to the drive or B) use the desktop application to choose which files I want to sync (it does not, although I think it is supposed to) simply allow you to sync the whatever compatible files are on the HD.

When I try the drag and drop, the file "looks" like it is on the satellite but when I try to view/listen with the iOS app on my iPad, I get nothing.  Sometimes it tries to open a safari page in iOS that just sits there....other times it simply sits doing nothing.

When I try the desktop application and moved over a media folder, the folder itself may copy but the actual media file does not so basically I'm sitting there with a bunch of empty folders in the satellite.

When I try to view or listen to anything other than the preloaded how to and sample videos/picture using the iOS app, I either get a black screen or it tries to open a mobile safari page which simply sits blank.  When I go to close that mobile safari page, I notice that there is yet another mobile safari page directing to www.seagate.com/blahblahblah that is actually letting me control the drive but none of my media appears there either.

Needless to say, I am a bit frustrated as this should not be complicated.  I can connect wirelessly to the drive no problem with my iPad but just can't do anything with it.

I would appreciate any thoughts.

The NTFS driver may not have quite "taken".  Please eject the Satellite, restart the Mac, and reconnect the Satellite.

Re: Anyone Else Not Able to Do a Thing With Their Satellite?

That did not work.  I still cannot play any .m4v files that I manually move over and the Seagate Media Sync still doesn't work and I still can't play any music.  When I manually add a .m4v file over from iTunes into the satellite drive and then manually change the file extension to .mp4, and try and play it through the iPad application, it switches to a mobile Safari window and will play.  However, there is no way I should have to go in, manually add each file and then manually change the file extension for no good reason.

[ Edited ]

I've had nothing but problems for the week I've been using the GoFlex Satellite. I'm using the Finder to drag and drop media onto the drive. From a cold start the drive will start writing files properly but within 5 minutes it will start to fail with data errors. I've tried using a Windows computer to write to the drive and get the same kind of failure. Here I get a Window delayed write failure. I'm sure if I eject the drive and set it aside until tomorrow it will start out writing properly.

When the drive starts failing the lights on the USB interface dim and relight, dim and then go out  completely. I'm wondering if getting a Firewire interface will help.

Re: Anyone Else Not Able to Do a Thing With Their Satellite?

I'd consider talking to Seagate about those failures. That seems like a larger problem. I have had my Satellite for a few days now and have really wrung it through the wringer, and I can drag and dop files just fine to the harddrive... I've copied about 300 GB so far of different things. When connected over USB, the file transfer speeds are very good. ( though I haven't specifically measured... it feels like "harddrive speeds", meaning that files copy over reasonably fast enough that I don't get frustrated :smileyhappy:  )

The only hiccup I ever had was having to reboot 2 times to get the NTFS "activation" working on my Mac.

( OS X 10.6.8 )

Re: Anyone Else Not Able to Do a Thing With Their Satellite?

My problems with copying files to my Satellite through the Finder were solved by returning the drive to Seagate on an RMA and getting a replacement. But I now have issues with the Seagate software. The Seagate Media Sync worked on the first library I added, transferring most but not all the files in the folder. These were movies I'd ripped from a DVD. They will play through the GoFlex Media App. Good.

But when I added my iTunes library of TV show videos (downloaded from iTunes), the Sync software creates folders but does not copy files. I copied the files through the Apple Finder. Now if I try to play any of those files through the iPad App it switches to Safari and looks as if it is trying to download the file before playing it rather than streaming.

So:

1) Sync software worked once to copy files but not again (and not completely for some reason).

2) App will not play video downloaded from iTunes natively; jumps to Safari and will not stream.

UPDATE: On the iPhone when the App switches to Safari it begins to stream immediately. If I can get this behavior on my iPad I will be satisfied.

All software and iOS are at the current release. 64GB iPad with 15GB free.

Re: Anyone Else Not Able to Do a Thing With Their Satellite?

I can drag and drop music and video dl'ed from iTunes on my PC to the Satellite, but when dragging them on my Mac, I get the slashed circle character at the end of my pointer instead of the file, and it doesn't drop. I did run the .dmg file on the satellite drive.
