I just picked up the satellite (500gb) with latest firmware version installed. I am unable to get videos (itunes/ipad compatible) to play properly on my iphone 4 or my ipad....both which are running latest OS 5.0+.

The videos play for about 5 minutes and then stop, which Im brough back to the folder screen.

Anyone have any suggestion to fix this?

Hi,

I have a similar problem with my BlackBerry phone.  Less than 10 minutes after I start something playing, I get a 'buffering' display that stays on screen and the video never continues.  I suspect it is an issue with the wifi on the phone.

I dont think its a wifi issue with my iphone. If i watch the movies via a third party app (Buzz Player), then movies play fine. If I watch via the freeAgent app then I get this issue. I have notice that the movies (.m4v) purchased via Itunes play fine. But not with nonpurchased movies.

No, it's not the wifi on the phone (using a blackberry 9930), nor is it the wifi on your tablet (I'm using a blackberry playbook).

For a while I did not have any issues with buffering, or even lost wifi connections. However, a short while ago I uploaded my full music collection onto this drive (30gigs), I sometimes experienced some buffering, but not a lot. I stumbled across a bunch of music I forgot about, loaded that up as well. Now almost every 3 mind I got issues with buffering, and the only way to reconnect is to reset the drive and reconnect.

My guess is either the drive is somehow still busy in the background indexing, or the drive has become fragmented. Indeed, after removing, adding and removing stuff, I saw that the defragmentation rate was about 25%

Haven't found any postings about people defragging, and if it's even necessary.

I'll report back after the weekend.

So in short - no buffering with drive barely filled - now a lot.

Btw, the rest is movies, mp4s, 1000kbit bit rate. So it's not that I'm trying to stream full-on HD movies. About 20gigs left on the drive.

Overnight i defragged the drive. So far that seems to have done the trick.

Also i noticed difference in behavior if the drive is 'hot' or 'cold'.

When i place the drive on a table top, instead of a comforter, bed, table cloth, etc. there's no disconnecting of the drive. I've also ran a couple of tests without the USB plug inserted.

So it seems that when the drive is running hot, the buffering / disconnecting is happening much more often than when it's cool.

Yes, I have the same problem. Appears wifi works for a few minutes on start up, then off to sleep it goes.

I am really disappointed with this product. Basically for me it is a paper weight. I have reported to Seagate (like others), with no response. Have reloaded the new firmware etc.. nothing.. 

Suggest another email to support, but you are in the black hole queue...

At this time I'm not convinced that this drive can actually handle being at near max capacity.

My disconnect issues seem to happen at the end of each video file requiring me to shut down the app on the iPad and reboot the drive.

I think there is a new firmware in another thread that I am downloading to install...hopefully Seagate will keep working on these issues until they are all resolved.

At least the drive is mostly working with my iPad...it won't work with my Touchpad at all :-(

UPDATE - installed new firmware and should have some time tomorrow to experiment.

Seems like the new firmware may have improved the stability of the wifi connection...had to say for sure as I didn't have as much time to stream music videos and tv episodes today as I had expected.
