Horrible Media Browser - Horribly Slow !!!!

Seagate – Go flex Satellite 500Gb WiFi

Are you Kidding Me! – The Idea of a WiFi enabled Media Drive to Expand on the storage of the I-Pad and other Tablet’s on the market is a Great Idea because the 64Gb on the Large tablets just is not enough room for those of us with music collections and movie collections. However the Media Interface on the GoFlex TOTALLY SUCKS! - IT’s the worst browser I have ever seen.

1)      You have not explained that when you Open the GoFlex in a Browser window that the little Scanning Drive symbol in the upper right hand area means exactly that - and you will not find all your media until it completes its scan – “That is painfully SLOW” and will take a very long time.

2)      The functionality of the browser is horrible – it’s not able to read the ID3 Tag information of music files so there is NO ORGANIZATION for Artist – Album – etc. …. HORIBLE can’t find anything Fast – It’s all jumbled together - Repeat HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!

3)      Photographs and Videos same thing as no:2 ---- Slow – Slow  Slow !!!!!!!

If you are going to pursue this External WiFi Drive – Take My Advice! – Drop the horrible – Slow Unorganized Media Scanning System and Develop a Streamlined down and dirty File Explorer that people can use that is just like Windows Explorer – Go To a Directory Open the Directory – Double Click a File to Play it – Cut Copy Past to move things around, Grab & Drag to a Playlist add checkmarks I don’t care.

To have the mess you have with the current interface would be embarrassing if you ask me it’s way too slow! – And the fact that it takes forever to create its file location tables is one of the main reasons it will never perform well.

A Java or Flash based Explorer without a File Location Table that has to be rebuilt every time new files are added or reorganized would be much better than this Unorganized SLOW crud you have now.

I don’t want to have to wait around for things to happen when I won’t them to happen, and I don’t have time to look around trying to find things when I need them  – And I would be willing to bet I am not the only person that feels the same way!

Sincerely:  Robert

Welcome to the club, Robert! :smileyhappy: Make sure you post this on Amazon, too... it seems to be the only way to get any attention from these people!

Re: Horrible Media Browser - Horribly Slow !!!!

I have passed your feedback along to our design team.

I would like to ask that you verify whether or not the latest firmware update is installed on your device:

The GoFlex Media software has an explorer-like view where you can navigate by folder. Just click the button called Folder View on the left of the screen. If you touch a file supported by your phone/tablet in that view it will play.  We are currently testing an update that will allow you to select multiple files in folder view and play them. We are also working on several improvements to the sorting abilities.
While waiting there are several 3rd party Apps that take advantage of the DLNA capability of the GoFlex Satellite and offer some variety in the way you sort your content.  Several iOS (iPhone/iPad) customers have pointed out 8Player lite and Fusion Stream as good solutions while waiting for the updated GoFlex Media App.  Android also offers similar Apps for example many Galaxy devices include an App called AllShare that will see the Satellite content.

Re: Horrible Media Browser - Horribly Slow !!!!

The Media Browser is realy horrible. Even the navigation within the folder tree. Has someone of the devellopers ever used this device on their own?? I have about 25.000+ mp3's on the disk. How could i find something without mp3 Tags?? For now, I have followed the instructions  from some nice guys who managed to get samba working on the device. So i could use it like any other network share. But using the media browser is realy horrible.

Re: Horrible Media Browser - Horribly Slow !!!!

Seagate, PLEASE fix this!  I really REALLY want to like this device, but without a decent UI with ID3 Tagging for mp3's it is pretty much worthless!  I may as well have purchased a standard portable usb drive.

I'm going to be optimistic and assume that your software team is working on a new version.

Re: Horrible Media Browser - Horribly Slow !!!!

Totally agreed that the media browser is terrible. So slow and unresponsive. Also, the Internet pass thru doesn't always work. It usually takes 4 or 5 tries before it connects to both of my router at work and at home. The idea of this product is great but the software is seriously in need of some work. Sometime I wonder if the people who designed the software actually use this thing! dcdc

Re: Horrible Media Browser - Horribly Slow !!!!

I've been happy with Seagate products. Much better than Western Digital as a whole but this takes that cake.

I would have to agree that this piece of hardware has a lot to improve on.

I recommend people to move on until this product gets updated. Will use mine for simpler file storage for now.
