Re: How do large media libraries get indexed?

I think I shall return the drive. It's what Seagate Support finally advised afther they had gone through all thier suggestions.

It's still not working.

Re: How do large media libraries get indexed?

Update,

All 111,000 songs indexed, but it has been stuck on 7500 of the 10000 albums. Acting very eratic; app crashing, losing connection, not being about to find any music, not being able to play music.........

I just don't think it can handle this much data.

Re: How do large media libraries get indexed?

Yeah, I am working with Tech Support now. The one good thing is they got back to me right away. They are having me put the data on in chunks like you, I'm thinking I am going to have the same problem after.

Maybe we both have bad units as I don't see to many people saying they are having the same problem or maybe I am not seeing all the complaints.

Still can't get it to work. Were you able to get a new one or did you just give up on the product Bengerfood?

Re: How do large media libraries get indexed?

Hey, If you haven't returned it yet I have some advice. So if you have oh well, hopefully if someone else is having this problem they can find this useful. It takes time if you don't already have it done on the drive your media is on, but index it yourself while the drive is connected to your computer. If you view your files in the folder view it's much easier to organize them in usage. I guess this isn't that good of advice, but it's what I do and it works great for me. But I have a much smaller library than you and others have. I wonder if there is some kind of indexing software you could get for your computer to organize it before you transfer it to the drive without the sync program. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

Re: How do large media libraries get indexed?

Section 2, step 2 of the user guide needs a complete rewrite. If you have an enormous collection of files, this device is going to take a long time to index it all. Once you copy everything to it, _safely_ disconnect it from your PC. After that make sure it's turned on and just let it go for a long time. My drive failed miserably in its first attempt. I probably turned it off too soon.
I finally read a few reviews and community postings explaining how to work through the problems. If your indexing failed, remove the two GoFlex folders and .swap. After that, power it back on and leave it. Just how long, it's hard to tell. It doesn't tell you it's finished (that I know of). I also read that if you have missing tags or obsolete tag versions in your files, they might not get indexed.

I don't know if performance could be better but it seems that it _should_ be. Quality of the product is good but the setup portion of the documentation is TERRIBLE!!! The other defect is that the device should tell you in the GUI or Browser, the completed percentage of indexing. That way folks could avoid shutting it down before indexing is complete and avoid corrupting the index. My device has successfully completed its indexing and I'm finally pleased with it. I'm ready to take it for a road trip and see how it performs.

Thanks for the replys Tyler and Autryid, Tech support finally just told me to return it for a replacement. I decided not to replace it and just got a refund. I don't think this unit is ready for 7000 plus albums yet.

Hopefully they will come out with a firmware fix and then I would gladly buy it again as it would be a great device if it only would work for me!

Re: How do large media libraries get indexed?

Well I'm back, having recieved an entirerly new unit in the post a couple of days ago.

I tentatively put a small section of my music library on the disk and left it to index. Some hours later the disk was silent and inactive, so I hooked it up and discovered that... about a third of the material had completly failed to index.

Corrupted index already - who knows?

I'm afraid to say that it looks like all the problems I was having with the first unit were to do with flakey software and not a flakey device.

Have deleted the goflex folders and the .swap file and hope it will work this time

Thank you Autryld. That seems to have worked. Now to see if I can repeat the process and slowly get my whole library on there...
