If I understand you correctly my answer would be that it is a wifi hard drive and it doesn't physically connect to your device. It sends a wireless signal to it. The device has limitations but works fine as long as you adapt to its limitations, install the new firmware, and safely disconnect it when youre done adding media to it or organizing the media on it with your computer.
