You just follow the procedure I linked a few posts before applying the steps where mentions to the "minidlna" are made only. That will turn off dlna completely, without impacting anything else. About sftp, you'll need to find an sftp package compiled for the GFS' processor or compile yourself from the source, but I can't help you with that, as I didn't do it myself. Finally, I think that skipping ssh installation wouldn't be an option if you want sftp, as ssh usually is a dependency for sftp...

This tread looks very interesting. I really really hate how slow the seagate goflex app works. I have looked into the info on that "hack" site and really want to give it a try. How do I go about turning off the DLNA? Really want to install SFTP so I can read PDF directly off GFS with Goodreader. Is it possible to skip "step 1" about installing SSH and go straight into "step 2"?

Hi All,
Raymond, thanks a lot for a good point.
I've moved all log , config and lock files away from flash on to hidden directory on GFS HDD. This should minimise flash wear.
Attaching new zip file with smb.tar and putty.
Better to install on fresh GFS (right after FW update)
Just put tar file in a root of GFS HDD
Log in via terminal to GFS
untar vith command: "tar -xv -f /media/sda1/smb.tar -C /"
Then siwtch off and on again to let samba start, or change to "/etc/rc5.d" and start samba manually by entering "./S99samba start"

Thanks for the useful tips. I got a very dumb question...I followed the instruction on "step 1" to install ssh. But how to open a ssh session on windows 7 to confirm that I have successfully got ssh installed on GFS? I typed in all the red command lines on terminal but not sure how to get onto the ssh session? I know this is a dumb question but I have never done anything like this using terminal. I am new to all this stuff....but I really want to learn and this GFS sorted. Thanks for all the help!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're referring to the Command Prompt (cmd) when you talk about terminal in Windows, right?
If that's the case, remember that Windows doesn't support ssh sessions by default and you need to download and install some remote terminal client (like PuTTY).
Once done, you'll be able to create an ssh session to your GFS if you installed the package correctly on it.

Ok, short update after disabling DLNA.
Guess the only thing is to wait for a jailbreak on the Ipad 3 and install XBMC.
Unfortunately I don't think XBMC has TV out capabilities and that's a big drawback as I use the Ipad a lot to travel and eg connect to a hotel TV.

Ok, I installed SSH on my GFS. Opened SSH session with PuTTY and type in the red command lines under step 2 instructions. But after I reboot theh GFS, Goodreader can't connect to the SFTP. On right side of Goodreader, under "Connect to Servers" tab, I can see my GFS with http:// and SFTP:// address. But when I click on the SFTP, it brings up a login window asking username and password. I tried root/goflex and my login I set for my GFS but both failed. I'm a bit confused here...how do I connect to the GFS using SFTP on Goodreader?
Sorry for all these newbie question. I can't find any other place to ask.
Thanks for all your help.
