Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

I am having the same problem.  I purchased mine 2 days ago and had just finished uploading files and when I connected it to an ipod touch and started watching a movie the wifi light went solid green after about 20 min. and disconnected.  Then it would not shut off.  I have tried to connect via USB to the computer to see if that would help and it doesn't recognize the device anymore.  It is frozen.  From everything I am reading I have to let the battery drain and hope for the best.  I already tried the hard reset button the back and that did not work either.

I purchased this drive from Dell so I guess I may have to send it back if it doesn't work properly.  I really liked it and if it could be used as intended it would be awesome.  I'm very disappointed at this point since I've only had it for 2 days!

Seagate- Are there any fixes/patches for this?   Seems like a MAJOR problem for a lot of people right now....

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

This product has a design defect and freezes or hangs when attempting to use it in wifi mode. It operates ok as a USB3 hard drive.

I used this product initially as a USB3 hard drive for my notebook computer and it performed adequately for the first day I had the product. On the second day I used it in wifi mode and it freezed while in battery operation with adequate battery power. Could not reset, power down or connect to USB port of the computer and had to wait until the Goflex device powered down. I repeated testing of the wifi mode and the same problem happened immediately. Repeated this test five times and the same problem and result occurred.

I found that the device can come out of hanging if you press both the reset and power button together for more than 15 secs. There was slightly better performance when placed on a metal bar that acted like a heat sink as suggested elsewhere on this blog but in the end the device is useless in its current form – suggest that Seagate re-examines the wifi operation and wifi chipset for overheating.

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

Try deleting the .swap file that's located at the root of the Satellite drive. Let me know if that resolved the issues you described here.

We also released a new firmware version for this drive yesterday that might eliminate a lot of the issues users have been experiencing:

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

I am having the same issues. I updated my firewire, software, uploaded it. Not just that it does not switch off till the battery drains, but Folder View and other basic software does not work. Folder sorting needs to be simplified. I don't see updated folders every, I have to reboot, reinstall, factory reset the whole thing for them to show. Video plays for 3mins, then it disconnects and has to be reset - this is not a product that should be released. I paid 200 bucks and it is worthless. You need to fix this ASAP, this will bring a bad reputation for Seagate products. DO NOT BUY till they fix all these issues. EXPENSIVE mistake.

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

Hi, I've had the same problem since upgrading the firmware of the drive. It is now unusable since it works for about 5 minutes then freezes & will not switch off or allow any devices to connect although it is still transmitting its CSID. When you try to connect on your device it stays connection not possible. Connection of the USB cable doesn't switch off the wifi transmission or allow pc connection to the drive. Pressing and holding the on/off button for about 90 seconds is the only way to switch the drive off. I now have a very expensive paper weight.

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

Having exactly the same issue with my new Satellite drive, froze yesterday (June 2012), power and re-set buttons unresponsive. Had to let drive battery run down. Contacted Seagate tech support, advised to re-flash drive with latest firmware. Re-charged drive, seemed to be ok, copied across firmware update file then found couldn’t power down drive, power button didn’t work. I can access the drive from my PC but can’t switch off and the Wi-Fi doesn’t work. Contacted Seagate tech support again, they agree drive should be re-placed.

I pointed out to Seagate that many other people are having the same problem as me for almost a year now, they should look at this forum or the drive’s review, they were strangely silent on that.

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

[ Edited ]

I buy one too and I'm not surprised since for me Seagate = c**p.

For that I stop buy hard drivres from this company 1 year ago. All hard drives buy

from them die inside 1 year only.

So why I buy Satellite.

Just because I don't find other company who sell wifi hard disk.

Like always I lose my money buying something from Seagate.

But be sure it's last time.

Seagate have no quality and it's just s**t product.

Don't trust Seagate.

PS

Hahaha

Funny they change automatically bad words.

Proof many have againts them.

I understand that...

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

I have two drives wtih p/n 1AYBP1-500 which is my first drive, and 1AYBP1-506 is my second and awful drive. 500 series drive works like charm even for 14 hours of continous streaming without any problem (also no need to reset in my 6 month usage time, flawless! ) and because of that perfection I've bought second one but this 506 series cannot work more than minimum 5 - maximum 15 min/1.60 gb. Two drives with opposite behaviour. I really dont get the idea of ignoring this faulty drives or this people on this forum. I have exact same problem with the user dunspro and all other guys.

Why seagate doesn't care about its product? Moreover why Seagate let this magnificient product turn into a piece of crud? No answering nonchalant bevaviour.

I get the idea of poor player, codecs may have licensing issues but my drive cannot operate! I use oplayer on my working 500 series and I dont need to care about any format , it plays any format without any problem. I love having 500gbs of video in my pocket.

But my 506 is a big disappointment. I really don't get it, it frustrates me. Anyway guys I wonder if anyone got&installed the hacked cfw for the drive, they claimed it resolves the freezing thing but I'm not sure. Please help.

What a shame on you Seagate, you know the problem but you are doing nothing.

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

Just tried this and it worked on mine - hold the start button in for at least 20 seconds.  Unit shut down and I'm now charging it.

Last time it 'hung up' I had tried up to 8 seconds (like most computers) but ended up waiting until the next day after the battery wore down.

Thanks to a contributor farther down the list here.

Re: Satellite will not turn off, reset or respond

Thanks for the advice - it worked as far as shutting down the unit.  Bottom didn't feel hot though - warm yes,

But, again - nice call :-)
