Direct internet access possible, not from seagate?

It looks like the Central Axis runs freenas. Is it possible to access the unit through the internet directly and not have to go through Seagate Global access?  I need a faster download when I'm out of the office ( I get about 56Kb).  The code is avaliable from Seagate under the gpl for download.  I'm just not a programmer.  I think this is a feature that would be desired.  Reply if you would like this option or can help.

I too would like to know if it is possible? If the Maxtor had a port number you could assign to it then I would say yes, however i see no where to assign a port number.

Re: Direct internet access possible, not from Seagate?

Seagate was kind enough to send me a direct reply:

"Unfortunately the drive is only accessible through the Global Access site at this time. It may be possible to access it another way, but we do not support it nor would we be able to help you set it up."

The best way, is to find a way to VPN into the network with the drive, and access the drive through it.  There are many VPN routers available in stores, and most of them will allow you to PPTP or L2TP into your home network.

OpenVPN Hamachi access

The VPN sounds like a good solution. The reason I got the Central Access was because there are no servers or IT where I'm at (Looks like I just got promoted).  It looks like I'll be building a Server now. I will probable look at using Hamachi or OpenVPN.  I'm looking at creating a method for offsite backup also. Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll post if I get anything working.  Another option would be for Seagate to increase their bandwidth.(hint hint)
