I have a Maxtor Central Axis Home Edition 1TB NAS device. I have had it for about a year and I found it stopped the other day with the Power Light off, the Disk Activity Light off and the light on the right that looks like an upside-down exclamation mark ( ¡ ) (the status light?) lit solid red.

I tried reset several times. I tried cycling the power many times. When I plug the unit in nothing happens except the red status light lights up solid (no flashing). No other lights light. Not a sound. Nothing...

What can I do? I have a ton of photos on that drive. Most are backed up, but the last few weeks (several thousand photos) are not backed up yet.

Yes. I still need help.

I'd like to know if I can open the case and set the drive up in a desktop computer internally. Will that give me access to the data if only the power supply is bad?

I tried replacing the power supply and had no luck.

My priority is getting the data off the drive, then getting it replaced under warrantee. Opening the case will void the warrantee as I understand it.

Please advise on best next steps.

It appears that the drive has a Linux Ext3 file system, so you will need a utility such as Explore2FS if you intend to mount it on your Windows box.

So, if I get the drive out and insert it into something like the Thermaltake Sata HDD USB Docking Station, can I connect via USB and use a utility such as Explore2FS or Ext2Read to copy the files directly from Windows XP to another folder elsewhere on my network?  It looks to me like I wouldn't need to have Ubuntu installed at all?

This may be a better application, but the author warns that "this is beta software. Do not use it unless you have a complete backup of your computer!"

I have seen reports in other forums that some of these Linux based external boxes use a ReiserFS file system. Virtual Volumes claims to support these.

I did not see an answer to the original post in this thread.  What does the solid red status light indicate?  The manual does not decode this indication.  I have one of these drives that seems to boot fine with a white status light, but eventually the light goes to solid red.  Please advise.

This thing is a piece of junk and Seagate's service is horrendous. My drive crashed under warranty and after 3 attempted calls and finally waiting on hold for 25 minutes I'm screwed. It appears my options are to pay Maxtor $1,600.00 to get my data off their lousy drive and get a replacement or pay an outside source to recover my data and void my warranty. I think I'll go the second route and throw this piece of trash away and never buy another Seagate product.It has a 1.5 rating on Amazon and horrendous reviews pretty much across the web - STAY AWAY.
