in reading different forums it appears that the blinking orange indicates the controller failed. it appears to be a very common problem!
I took it apart and plugged the drives into my pc. I can see the small partition using an EXT2 program. the large partition shows as a raw partition?
when I click on it windows vista asks me to format. so I reconnected just 1 (two drives did not work, reversing cabling did not work so I left it with 1 drive connected) of the drives in the shared storage case and was able to get the device to boot and I can see the drive on my pc through the network however I still can't see any data? I can write to it but I can't see any of the old files. properties shows that over half is used so I know something is
any thoughts? I really want to get to those files and don't want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars with some data recovery firm.

Mate, I think that if you can access one of the drives, or even get the web administration page it is not the controller but a broken RAID, however, what is the blinking pattern, one orange one green, or three green one orange?
Read this post, it is excellent and the instructions work...
Also what version of the "Firmware" are you running if you run the latest one 3.1.28 you can get some additional info on your drives by typing: http://<your maxtor IP>/advanced/mss_dbg_1.asp
