I am having great trouble accessing some files on my (up to now) trusty Maxtor Shared Storage. It is the original version & 300GB.
It has firmware 2.6.2 installed and, I am sure, has no physical/electrical problems.
It had 2 private (limited access) folders that contained much data. They have been accessible from all the computers/users on my home network by giving each user/PC permission. Each PC/user had the 2 folders mapped as network drives. Originally this was set up when the PCs were running a mix of XP & then Vista. I upgraded to Win 7 across the main PCs a few months ago and it continued to work okay (the drive mappings continued to be available after the upgrade).
I bought a brand new Win 7 PC and attempted to connect it and set up the drive mappings today and it has all gone terribly wrong.
I couldn't access the private folders from the new PC although I could (& continue to) access the admin and drive management perfectly.
The problem was network permissions / logging in. I found the knowledgebase article about Vista (& Win 7) authentication (http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/
Then things hit the fan. I tried changing the access on the main private share to public thinking I could live with it just being public. I can now see the share and access it BUT there is nothing there - no folders or files. This was true from any PC I tried. I thought changing it back to private might return the files but I found my network drive mapping didn't work any more from any of the old PCs and I have the same problem of not being able to log in to access it. I changed it back to public - I could access it but still no files. I dug out an old WinXp box but it also could no longer log in to the share when private nor find files when it was public.
The missing files don't appear to have been deleted off the disk because the amount of free disk space hasn't changed. I tested on another sample private folder and changing it to public and back again didn't make any of its files disappear.
So does anybody have any suggestions on how to find or access the files that I can't see any more?
Although I am mainly worried about accessing the files, if anybody has tips about being able to access/log in to a private folder under Win 7 that would be appreciated too.
Many, many thanks for any help,
David Young

Hi Everrest,
Thanks for your reply and suggestions.
However I tried both creating a new user and changing passwords without any success in accessing the target share when it is set as private (limited access).
I have a suspicion that my problems miught be because when I was having Win7 authentication problems, I may have created a second copy of the user for the share that held my data but that is a guess based on an old forum message I saw.
Anyway for now, I've packed my MSS off to i365 and I expect they should be able to get hold of the data I can't reach - albeit at some lightening of my wallet.
Thanks again,
David Young
