No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

I have a 1000GB Maxtor Shared Storage 2.   Absolutely brilliant product.   I upgraded the firmware to 3.1.28 recently.   The DLNA 'Video' streaming functionality is now not working correctly with my Sony PS3 (firmware 2.10).    This is strange given the update was suppose to officially support and certify DLNA / uPnP.

The PS3 can see the Maxtor Shared Storage 2 Server; it's content (My Music, My Pictures and My Video) in their respective folders, but for some reason the PS3 cannot stream or play the Video content hosted on the storage drive.   The Sony PS3 reports the file as 'unsupported file', which is strange, because before it worked.   Fortunately, there are no issues with streaming JPEG pictures and MP3, WMA and AAC music files.

The type of video files I am attempting to stream from the Maxtor Shared Storage 2 to the Sony PS3 are MPEG4, DivX and H.264 AVC files ranging from 300 MB to 1GB.

I have performed my own tests to rule out the PS3 being an issue.   1.) The same files play successfully if copied onto the PS3 via USB.  2.) I can successfully stream & play video files from my Sony DLNA certified notebook attached to the same network running Microsoft Vista Ultimate.

I have refreshed, rebuilt & rebooted the MSS 2 media server.  The network is also hardwired (cat 5e), so that rules out network instability issues.

Can you please explain why this may be happening?  I have scanned the Internet forums and it appears a number of people are having the same issue.   Installing Twonky media server apparently resolves the issue, but then I loose all the good Maxtor/Segate automatic backup stuff, etc.   Can you confirm what version of DLNA is supported on the Maxtor Shared Storage II?    Is it possible to downgrade the version to 3.1.26 or earlier to get it back like it was before?

It just doesn't seem to make any sense that I can retrieve and play music files and watch pictures on the PS3 successfully, but not video.   To be honest the only reason I bought the MSS 2 was because it was DLNA. :smileysad:

If you could test your product against a PS3 with the latest firmware and confirm the issue that would be great.  Fixing it would be even better.

Re: No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

Hello,

I've bought the same NAS (Maxtor shared storage II of 1Tb ) to use it with my PS3.
My PS3 (firmware :2.10) is connected throught wifi to a D-Link DIR-655 router (uPNP feature is activated in router setup)
My Maxtor (with last firmware version) is connected throught wired network to the router. (media server is activated)
Both have the same IP range (192.168.1.xx).

From my PS3, I can see the multimedia server, but I can't see the content.

What's wrong ?

Must I install another DLNA program on the Maxtor ?
How can I test if DLNA feature is working on the Maxtor ?

Regards
Eric.

Re: No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

I have the exact same issue.  If I copy a file to the MSS II, it shows up as "Unsupported Data", but if I copy the file to a DVD (burn it as DATA, not a Video DVD), it will play the exact same file just fine.  To be clear, in case Seagate support ever responds to this thread, the DVD has an MP4 file burned onto it as a FILE.  The PS3 reads the DVD, shows the files on it, and plays the file fine.  The same file on the MSS II shows up with no file name, just that there is some "Unsupported Data" found on the Media Server.  Music from my iTunes library plays fine from the MSS II on the PS3.

Anyone solved this yet, or should I return the product?

Thanks,
Kurt

Yep. I have the same problem here. Photos are fine, but the only videos I can stream are mpeg2.

Re: No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

I have the same problem, when i use Memory Card or USB Stick on ps3. You have to use the green button on PS3 concole (triangle). And choose all files, after that i can use the video file. I have tried only on Usb Stick and memory card

Re: No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

I have the same problem.

WithNero 8.x (Media Home uPnP Server) on my main computer. (Transcoding turned off)
MP4 (AVC), AVI (Divx, Xvid ...) and MPG2 files play fine.

Files on Disk
MP4 (AVC), AVI (Divx, Xvid ...) and MPG2 files play fine.

From MSS II
Only MPG2 files will play.

Re: No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

I have an update...

As per Segate's instructions I successfully downloaded and downgraded the firmware on the MSS II back to 3.1.26.   Unfortunately, the firmware downgrade did not fix the issue.

I have subsequently upgraded the MSS II back to 3.1.28.

What I can report (which appears to be consistent with other experiences) is that the MSS II can stream .vob files (MPEG2) to the PS3 on both firmware versions without a problem.

However you cannot stream .avi, mp4, mpeg4 and H.264/AVC and .TS files to the PS3.

I can confirm there are no issues streaming music and photos on both firmware versions to the PS3.

I therefore kindly plead with Segate / Maxtor technical support and development who have not responded to this post to look into this issue and either address the problem with the MSS II or suggest a simple workaround.

Re: No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

I am having the same problem. Will play music and I can view pictures, but no video. I have tried multiple video formats, all of which are supposed to be supported by PS3. This is quite annoying. Hopefully, seagate will be able to come up with a solution for this. Please!!

Hi:

Thanks for your participation in the our forums so far. Please remember that this is an online community where many of the responses come from other users, such as yourself. The forum is not a replacement for Customer Service. Seagate representative do from time to time come to lend a hand answering posts but not necessarily on a continual or frequent basis. If you have immediate needs, your best bet is to contact Customer Service directly whether by phone, email, or chat.
Thanks.

Re: No Video Streaming on Playstation 3

Update 3 ...

Thanks Alan for your advice, but that's exactly what I've done without any further response from Maxtor / Seagate whatsoever.

My one and only advice was to download the old firmware again which I tried and it did not work.

As a last resort I installed the Twonky Media Software on the MSS II and at last it's working.   Mind you I'm now going to have to pay for that software, whereas I was hoping the inbuilt Maxtor software would do the same job given it's suppose to be DLNA compliant.

Segate really need to update their firmware to support the Video codecs to work with the PS3 and Xbox.   I have absolutely proven the software that comes with the MSS II is not fit for purpose.

Please moderator  -  request your technical support to look at this thread and other Internet posts regarding this issue.  Everyone has the same problem.

Thanks.
