Re: Slow file copy

[ Edited ]
I don't have a gigabit card in my Linux computer, but I was able to test with a Windows XP computer that has the gigabit interface.

I don't have a switch that supports 1Gbit/s so I put a crossed cable directly between the drive and the computer.

So far I have been able to read/write at about 12Megabyte/s.

I'll try to enable Jumboframes and see if that helps to increase the speed.

EDIT: No it didn't help to enable jumbo frames, just made it worse.
The gigabit interface used is an "Agere Systems ET-131x PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller"

Re: Slow file copy

I have had a little success speeding things up.  I can't get jumbo frames to work, It certainly won't work on my linksys switch even though it does say it supports them.  I even went as far as getting an intel pro card as my netgear card didn't support them either.  I was expecting a better performance either way but was surprised to find that I could only reach 99Mbps at best where I had seen 105Mbps with the netgear.  So I've swapped them back and I'm now getting 112Mbps, which is the best I've had so far.  It has to be said I'm only copying big file up to the NAS.

Today, after getting a media streamer, I coppied some files down from the NAS and was amazed how fast it was.  I haven't measured it yet but I recon I could be looking at over 200Mbps.

Re: Slow file copy

Hey runningonair, can you post your exact configuration? I am only able to get speeds of up to 12MBps just like Piglet. I get these speeds when connected directly to my laptop and when I go through my wireless router. Here's my setup.

  • Dell XPS 1640
  • Broadcom Ethernet Netlink Gigabit card
  • Cat6 Cable
  • Linksys 610N Wireless router
  • Intel 5100 Wireless Card

Also, if there is anyone else out there using the gigabit connection, can you post your data transfer speeds?

Re: Slow file copy

I think you speeds are a limitation of the actual hard drive in the server.

I have a gigabit network and one computer has WD raptor drives. A copy/paste of 1.5GB file to the same drive takes 1:30.  Copy to other raptor takes 1:01.  Copy to network drive takes 2:11 and network utilization never goes above 12%(or 120mb).

Given the specs of SATA2 and 7200rpm drive, I expected a little more in the transfer rate, but I need to find out what the actual hard drive that is being used in the server.  Does anyone know that information?

Of course that's much better than the TB server I bought from a competitor that only did 4mb despite saying gigabit compatible!

I have a secondary computer that has older hard drives in it and it gets the same 12% of the 1GB network when I do a copy to it.

12% of the gigabit connection = 120megabit = 15 megabyte/s transfer speed.  My slowest raptor drive does 71MB/s sustained transfer which is quite a bit larger than 15 MB/s.

Re: Slow file copy

Having the same problem... and other problems too. ( I plan to post them separately)

I have a Gig E switch with a bunch of MSFT PC's hanging off it and the speed at which files move to and from the Central Storage unit is pathetic.

Anyone solve the issue for windows Vista and Window7 PC's?

At this point I feel I should have bought just a USB drive.  This product is not doing what the box says...

Re: Slow file copy

From what I have read  the best speed is 12-14MB/s see the small netbuilder review. for more info.  The box list "tranmission Speeds" the same as Connectivity speed. Seagate doesn't state the "file transfer speed" that I have seen. This is probable on purpose.

Re: Slow file copy

When you connect your Maxter Shared Storage Ii to your 610N, does the port indicator light on the 610N show green or blue?

If it shows as green then you are running at 10/100Mbits, but if it shows blue then you are running at 1 gigabit.

I have a WRT610N and mine shows a green light, indicating a 10/100Mbit connection -- not the 1 gigabit that was promised!

Re: Slow file copy

I am showing the green LED as well...my XBOX 360 is showing blue though and I didn't thing that the XBOX 360 had a gigabit connection.

Re: Slow file copy

Just seen this post on the linsys forum that says that the LED's are backwards. Blue is for 10/100 Mbps and Green  is for gigabit.
