I'm trying to set a new Maxtor Shared Storage II 1T on my Mac, with limited success. Unfortunately, information in the user's manual is not complete, and I cannot find what I'm looking for in the FAQs.
Installation and setting went fine, apart for a note in the manual (p.4) stating the Center LED on the front panel should be turned on to show the Power On status. As I understand, this LED only blinks when the disks are used, and is never stady on. This information lets one think disks are not functioning at all.
After selecting the shared folder(s) with Maxtor EasyManage, they appeared on the Mac desktop as regular shared volumes. After setting the Mac to Sleep, however, the shared volume(s) were gone, and finding the way to see them again (opening EasyManage and reconnecting the "Public" user account) was not all that intuitive. The most obvious operation was not working (selecting Finder > Go > Connection to a server reports that the server might not be operative).
It seems the volumes dot not disconnect, but just disappear from the desktop - who knows why. If starting a backup, the shared volumes appears again. But then they might disappear again after a few minutes, even if the backup continues.
The ADSL internet connection breaks at times, and then returns back after a while. I don't know if it is the fault of the Maxtor or the router, but this problem appeared only after connecting the Maxtor.
There are things that I cannot understand in the setting procedure: is there a way to get rid of the garbage "My Document", "My Music" etc. folders in the root of the disk? My shared folder has no type assigned (nor Home or Business), however these folders are there.
Also, I cannot understand if I can reformat the internal disks, or they are tied to the NAS controller and must stay how they are. If so, are the only maintenance operations allowed the ones accessibile from the Web GUI?If the NAS goes down and I want to recover the data, how can I access them if I cannot reformat the internal disks to the Mac format? Can I recover them one a Linux PC? In this case, are Mac file types preserved, or are they reverted to some sort of generic data?
Also, there is also no way to know which disks are installed inside the NAS. Maybe someone, here, can let me know?
If the above problems can be solved, I think I can be happy with this device. The backup software is powerful and easy to use, the unit is quiet (it even automatically turns off when unused). But if the above problems remain, I guess I must return the unit to the shop in a week.
