Why does the Mirra client software suck so bad?

I patiently waited for new software, knowing that the brilliant minds at Seagate would fix all of Mirra’s problems soon.  It never happened.  Now realizing that this product is unfortunately near its end-of-life cycle, this is merely just a therapeutic rant of mine to fall upon deaf ears.

1)    Why must my computer bog down so much during file transfers that I want to kill someone?

2)    Why is there no way to STOP the Mirra Service that is causing so much pain without having to resort to killing the process in the task manager?  Can’t there just be a STOP button?  How about a “Bog down my computer processor at a time when I’m not using it instead of when I start my computer and want to actually accomplish something” button?

3)    Why doesn’t Mirra purge old data automatically to free up room on the server?  Instead, the drive fills up and that’s it.  End of story.

4)    When I try to purge old data, the capacity remains full.

5)    When I remove ALL backed up directories from ALL computers, the drive only indicates 8% remaining… even though NOTHING is being backed up.

6)    Why is there no PURGE ALL button?

7)    Why is there no way to remove old and long forgotten computers from the list of Local Computers?

Re: Why does the Mirra client software suck so bad?

I was just checking this out to find an answer to what you posed.....that is:

How to recover disk space from purge files?

I purchased a new computer and moved my 2nd drive from my old computer to my new computer.  This essentially created a duplicate backup for ~ 30Gb of photos.  I deleted it, but I didn't recover the 30Gb.

  1. Is it possible to do a hard reset on the box, wipe it clean and start over?
  2. how about whether or not it's necessary to check for defrag?

250Gb that's now down to 30Gb and going downnnn........

Re: Why does the Mirra client software suck so bad?

My initial post most likely reflected the frustrated situation I was in at the time... I have since calmed down and would like to state that the Purge actually DID begin to work.  It just took so long, and without ANY indication that it was actually doing something.  The only indicator was that the drive space very, very slowly began to increase.  There is an optical vision detector built-in to the software that makes sure that the value does not increase while you are actually looking at it.  Seagate has a patent pending on this "Watched Pot Never Boils" technology.

So, Item number 4 and 5 should read, "Why can't Mirra indicate to the user that it is actually doing the purge?"

The other items are still in effect.

In reply to Bentfam, there is a proceedure to reset the Mirra to factory settings.  You can find it in the users manual, or read my technique here (my technique is more fun and includes dairy treats!):

1) From each computer that uses the Mirra, remove ALL backup up directories.
1b) Shut down all the computers, or force quit the MirraService using the Task Manager.
2) Wait.  Wait more.  Go get some Ice Cream or Starbucks... take your time.
3) Press the button on the front of the Mirra three times quickly.  1, 2, 3.
4) If you hear TWO Beeps, you haven't waited long enough.  Go back to step 1.
5) If you hear THREE beeps, press the button three times again.  1, 2, 3.
6) The light should flash numerous times.  I have determined that it is flashing "Elvis Lives" in morse code, but can't be sure about this.
7) Start up the computers and re-establish the backup folders and such.

Tip of the day:  Use Ctrl-Shift-R to force the Mirra Client Software to search for the Mirra.

In answer to the defrag question.  I see no need for defragmentation.  The speed of the Ethernet port will never challenge the much faster HDD speeds, so the speed of the HDD is not an issue.  Better question would be, why is Gigabit Ethernet not available?

One little gem I know of is ctrl-shift-d - this brings up the "Mirra Support" pull-down which allows you to stop the Mirra service and clean the sync state!
