Check the Installation Guide. You can reset the unit, but this only removes the Admin password, change the Workgroup to MShome and resets the unit name (MSS-XXXXXXX). Since the drive actually contains an operating system I do not think you can reformat it. Once the unit is reset you can remove the data and start over.

Re: format / reformat maxtor shared storage ii

I struggled with this issue myself for ages. There is a way to effectively reformat the drive if you have the 1TB model by changing the drive configuration from one large drive to redundant storage on two drives. Using the Management software (Im using Maxtor Central Axis Manager on OSX Lion), go to Settings > Advanced > Central Axis Administration to bring up the web based admin.

Then, go to Advanced Features > Drive Configuration and change it from whatever you have now to the other option. Eg. If your using it in Linear mode, change it to Mirror and vice versa. This should give you the options to erase the drives and start afresh. Once the MSSII has rebuilt itself, you can change it back again.

Hope that helps.
