The new (refurbished) HD have the same noise sound!
I think that's a firmware issue!

Check out this dell page for a firmware update supposed to fix this issue:

I've tried it myself on a non G (shock sensor) non Dell drive. The difference was obvious.

While the DE17 firmware update works (from what I've ready elsewhere), it is only for a limited number of dell specified laptops. I wouldn't really consider this problem "solved" in that case, because I'm sure people are experiencing this in non-dell notebooks as well. I tried applying the update on my inspiron 1520, which didn't work, most likely since it's not on that compatibility list.
The only thing that's worked so far for me has been using hdparm -B 255 (254 did nothing). This turns APM completely off, something I'm not really comfortable doing as a long term solution unless there is some consensus that it's a safe option.
Lots of information regarding similar issues here:

My Dell Inspiron 6400 is not in the compatibility list neither but it worked perfectly (I burnt and used the ISO file provided)... I don't think this fix is for Dell users only, other users should give a try I bet it will work...

I was unable to apply the firmware update since I have a Momentus 7200.4 and it said my hardware was not compatible. However I was able to use Quiet HDD under Windows 7 and this did resolve the issue for me. I have not heard it click in over 2 weeks! ![]()
I have a laptop but it is basically stationary (sits in my den). I rarely take it places (but have that option when I need it). Still, I seldom put it into standby or hibernate.
Cheers!

Hi there ![]()
I upgraded my drive’s firmware to SD17 and it is true that it makes less “clicks” but it still clicls and when it clicks the computer hangs a little bit. I’m afraid that it damages my drive so, can someone upload the SD13 firmware?
Thanks for your time ![]()

I own a working ST9320421A S drive.
If you explain to me how to backup the firmware I will be happy to upload it.
