Heinz, If tech support had only the standard information to refer you to, there's just no additional information available on these drives at this point.
The best I can tell you currently is to try back for additional information in a few weeks to see if that's changed.

AskTheLeaf, tech support came back with a non-sensical and non-related answer.
nothing about what i had asked.
i did not request anything regarding any error, any fault, anything technical. nothing
detailed ABOUT the drives or any problems with them.
all i asked was a listing WHICH DRIVES DO, and which do not, HAVE SMARTALIGN
incorporated, both 2.5 and 3.5 versions.
anybody working at SEAGATE or selling SEAGATE commercially should be able to
answer this in 10 seconds flat.

Does anyone has tested the performance of SmartAlign? I did it. With a disillusioning result...
With a "native" XP partition (not aligned, start sector 63) the "Momentus Thin 320 GB" (which obviously has SmartAlign due to its data sheet) in a Lenovo T420 is twice slower as a XP with "correct alignment" (start sector 2048 as W7 did). Read performance is near equal, but write performance especially with small block sizes (512 kb, 4 kb) is very poor compared with a correct aligned drive. Tested with CrystalBenchMark.
I suggest that you shouldn't trust this "whitepaper", "technology" or whatever SmartAlign is.
Or is there a trick to gain full performance?

Ok thank you.
Im not sure read and write speeds with Smartalign, because have'nt time for crystal benchmark ( maybe later).
But i can recommend "Paragon Alignment Tool" . After doing align with that tool, looks like everything is finally ok.
