Is there anyone NOT encountering problems with Momentus XT?

I happened to have bought one today, I'm seriously considering a refund now because almost everyone is experiencing problems with the HD.

Is it true that every HD shipped has problem?

I guess that would be me ... Since the time I opened the box, installed, updated to SD24 ... ZERO issues. The drive does well. I'm in the minority - I don't use it on a MAC, I don't use it in a laptop - I use it on a workstation as a data drive for authoring, video editing and gaming. Works as intended.

How long have you been using it? Some say that the problems surface after a month of use, especially serious on Mac though.

Exactly 1month ... let me see if I can update my response in 2months and see if my statement still holds water. :smileywink:

No, this is NOT true.  I've had two 500GB Momentus XTs in RAID 1 in a Clevo x7200 laptop since November 2010.  No issues to report.  No beeping, whirring, nothing like I've seen in these forums.  I just upgraded to FW SD24 two weeks ago, just in case, after reading some of the forum issues.

However, I will agree what I've been seeing in forum posts is a bit disconcerting.  There have been some reports of issues with RAID 5 with the x7200 that brought me over to the Seagate forums to see if there was some kind of concern regarding RAID 5 and the Momentus XTs, but perhaps no one here is set up in this configuration.  AlanM, has this configuration been tested?  See Any problems Momentus XT in a RAID 5 using Intel ICH10 - Intel RST?

My recommendation is to NOT fall to the hype.  Try the drive out, and if you have problems return it.  But getting back to your original question.  No problems here.  Smooth sailing since November, 2010.  (Did I just jinx myself?)

Re: Is there anyone NOT encountering problems with Momentus XT?

I ve had the drive since sep-oct 2010, came with sd23. I've used it with a macbook black until last week. With sd23 I had the beachball thing and the spin down spin up(hated that!! probably was the cause of the beachball at that time?) anws, updated to sd24 with the spin down gone but still had some beachballing. I noticed the drive after some time to be very slower than when i first got it. Anw last week got a new macbook pro 2011, put it into that, strangely I had the beachball once on first boot up and after that until now everything had been running great! speed is back and thank gosh no more delays. Ofcourse everything that I read on this forum scares me a bit for the future but anyhow as it comes we shall deal.

Maybe after a while the ssd space fills up and causes problems? The only thing I can think that could have fixed it was the format and repartitioning from disk utility.

Take it easy, and just want to say thanks to the seagate team for working closely with us on this and I hope all of this  glitches get resolved.

I purchased this drive at the same time I bought my laptop. Upgraded the drive from SD23 to SD24 within minutes of it being installed. Never experienced the problem - laptop has been running for 3 weeks now. Inspiron 14R.

Re: Is there anyone NOT encountering problems with Momentus XT?

When I used my Momentus XT on my desktop I had no issues whatsoever. I had problems when I installed it together with other drives in another computer I have for storage, the Momentus would not speed down and the voltages for this desktop's PSU became very scary. Since then I replaced the momentus with a regular drive, and when I got access to the SD25 I reinstalled it in the storage array and my issues were solved. Since I already had another drive I placed it back at my personal desktop as the OS drive, and everything is rock solid, even tho, in this computer, it never presented any issues.

My guess is that most of the problems happened in notebooks, these are more prone to power shortage, so the momentus not speeding down caused a lot of headaches to users. Most other people I've noticed that do complain about it are people with Macs, they are in the ugly side of situation. Honestly, I didn't see anyone complaining about the drive when using it in a desktop, and the reviewers out there in the web are always enthusiastic about the drive, so I guess the answer for the OP's question is: Yes, a lot of people did not encounter any problems with the drive, and for that very reason they don't need to complain here at the forums.
