Re: Momentus 7200.4 500 GB (ST9500423AS) is slow in writing on unaligned partitions

The file system will be of course usable, I've done this several times, on different machines for the last couple of years, it works like a charm.

This is also a method to ensure that malware and virus will be installed on the drive.

Re: Momentus 7200.4 500 GB (ST9500423AS) is slow in writing

Hello all,

here is the update with more benchmarks of the drive ST9500423AS which was plugged into another system (Zotac ZBOX AD02-E + 2GB of RAM).

I've cloned only one first partition which was aligned beforehand (luckily WD provided the tool for doing so with its own drives).

This partition was formatted (not recreated!) while I had been installing Windows XP SP3 32-bit on it, so I ended up with WinXP on an aligned partition (it starts from 2048 sector).

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 shows following results for it (Windows XP SP3 32-bit @ Zotac ZBOX AD02-E):

Sequential Read : 114.112 MB/s
Sequential Write : 13.983 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 42.254 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 13.923 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.583 MB/s [ 142.2 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.501 MB/s [ 122.2 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 0.576 MB/s [ 140.7 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.581 MB/s [ 141.8 IOPS]
Test : 1000 MB [C: 19.6% (5.4/27.3 GB)] (x5)
Date : 2012/07/21 22:46:24
OS : Windows XP Professional SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86)

This is much better if compared to the benchmark of an unaligned partition...

Next step was to install Windows 7 64-bit in a new partition. After I had succeeded I ran CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1 and got following results ( Windows 7 SP1 64-bit @ Zotac ZBOX AD02-E ):

Sequential Read : 117.461 MB/s
Sequential Write : 13.992 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 42.883 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 14.062 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.578 MB/s [ 141.2 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.496 MB/s [ 121.0 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 0.575 MB/s [ 140.3 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.566 MB/s [ 138.3 IOPS]
Test : 1000 MB [C: 44.8% (13.1/29.3 GB)] (x5)
Date : 2012/07/22 22:54:12
OS : Windows 7 SP1 [6.1 Build 7601] (x64)

As you see they are almost identical to the results of Windows XP on the same hardware...

For your reference here are the results of WD5000BPKT (Windows XP SP3 32-bit @ Lenovo B550):

Sequential Read : 117.290 MB/s
Sequential Write : 59.902 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 45.502 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 34.067 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.679 MB/s [ 165.8 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.591 MB/s [ 144.4 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 1.710 MB/s [ 417.6 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 1.306 MB/s [ 318.8 IOPS]
Test : 1000 MB [C: 49.1% (13.4/27.3 GB)] (x5)
Date : 2012/05/27 0:52:24
OS : Windows XP Professional SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86)

NOTE: in all cases write caching was temporarily disabled for the drive.

The writing speed of WD5000BPKT is better... why? Has anyone observed similar slow writing speed of ST9500423AS ?

Regards,

Anton
