I had a chat with a Seagate representative today about this issue.
This is what he said to me:
1. This drive doesn't have a firmware,
2. A BIOS update (from your mainboard manufacturer) is needed to fix the issue(s),
3. Go to shop and exchange for a new disk.
Option 1 seems weird to me and so does option 2...

IMO, it's not only the drive he received. We have several Momentus ST9500420AS, different manufacturing dates (non-OEM), all with the very same problem in our Dell and HP machines.

Ok exchange is no solution, cause all harddrives have the same problem.
The answer a harddrive has no firmware is nonsense. I think you talked to a person who has no anticipation in hardware. There you need a little bit luck to get the right person.
BIOS update is no solution too, cause we have all different systems with a different BIOS and I had no problems with several other harddrives.
May be someone from seagate can tell us something about this issue? I thought this is a support forum...

I have been researching the purchase of 500 Gb hard drive to upgrade my MacBook Pro and I came across some technical info which may relate to this problem. It seems that starting a few years back computer manufacturers implemented a G protection in the notebooks (to protect the hard drive in the event of a sudden drop); this particular vendor advises that if one purchases an ST500420ASG - note the "G" at the end of the model number - this particular drive has a built in impact/drop protection system which might clash with the computer G protection. His recommendation is to disable the computer G protection and gives a link to the Apple on how to disable. The link is "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934?viewlocale=en_
The ........AS drives do not have this G protection built in.
Hope that this might help.
