Re: Momentus ST9500420AS Firmware Update

[ Edited ]
I wouldn't trust PCWizard.

Firstly, the author only reports the lower 20 bits of each 48-bit SMART attribute.

Secondly, the author does not understand Seagate's SMART attributes, which means the health and performance assessments are bogus.

Thirdly, the various features are ambiguously reported. For example, does "AAM - No" mean that AAM is not supported, or supported but not enabled?

Lastly, the APM value is confusingly reported as 32896, which in hexadecimal is 0x8080. The upper 8 bits indicate the manufacturer's recommended setting (0x80 = 128), and the lower 8 bits are the current setting, also 128.

AIUI, you should be aiming to change the APM (Advanced Power Management) level to 208. Hdparm is one utility that should allow you to do this:

http://hdparm-win32.dyndns.org/hdparm/

HDDScan is another:

http://hddscan.com/

AAM is Automatic Acoustic Management. This feature controls things such as seek noise by reducing the aggressiveness of the voice coil's acceleration and deceleration profiles.

Hitachi Feature Tool can set AAM levels, if supported:

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#FeatureTool

I notice that the Power On Hours Count is 0x37 (= 55), and the Load/Unload Cycle Count is 0x288 (= 648). This means that there is, on average, one load/unload cycle every 5 minutes. Are these the clicks you are hearing?

Re: Momentus ST9500420AS Firmware Update

Hi,

I'm having the same problem (Mac OS X sometimes beachballs when using the hard drive) with a Seagate Momentus ST9500420AS Rev. 2SDMI.

I downloaded the Dell patch (R250679), extracted the contents, burned a CD and booted from it.

My problem is that the FLASH.bat doesn't install the new firmware.

It doesn't give an error, it just says that it didn't find anything to upgrade, even tough it displays my firmware as 2SDMI.

Did you need to run FLDH manually? Which parameters did you use?

And, did this firmware actually solved your problem?

Regards

Re: Momentus ST9500420AS Firmware Update

The following line should work:

FDLH -m HOLLIDAY -i ST9500420AS -f 0005SDM1.LOD -b -v

The reason that the updater doesn't like your drive is that your firmware modules don't match the list of affected modules in the upgrade.cfs configuration file.

Here is the relevant line:

fdlh -m HOLLIDAY -h upgrade.cfs -b -v >text

Here is the decoded configuration file:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/dell_fw_cfg.txt

The format appears to be ...

(model) (original firmware modules) (firmware image file) (updated firmware modules)

As for whether the update solves the clicking problem, yes it does, if the clicking is related to frequent head parking.

Re: Momentus ST9500420AS Firmware Update

Actually, I'm not bothered by the clicking, but I was bothered by the hanging, even if only twice a month.

But even after updating the firmware the machine hanged once more in the same week, so I guess it didn't solve completely the problem.

Anyway, that was the only time since then, so at least it improved something.

Thanks!

Re: Momentus ST9500420AS Firmware Update

Im pretty sure this is also why I cant build a RAID 5 using a PCI raid card.

it fails like around 80% at random.. all 4 drives are brand new and I even

purchansed 2 more to rule out the bad drives if any.

I think the firmware needs to be updated.

Re: Momentus ST9500420AS Firmware Update

So is there an -official- firmware update for ST9500420AS (currently at 0002SDM1)? I tried the FW lookup webpage and it comes back empty (like it's not even working)...

Please advise...

Re: Momentus ST9500420AS Firmware Update

Same problem here.

Computer : Macbook pro unibody 13" 2009.

I have replaced the original  "Toshiba 160GB 5400rpm" by this drive and did a fresh installation. My system pauses occasionally when I am using it . Example : when typing or watching youtube.

Fast = yes

Smooth = no!

I bought it at Neweggs and I will see if I can get a exchange for another drive (not Seagate). It is a real pain and it is not acceptable.
