Re: Momentus XT 2nd Gen 750GB mouse freezes

I'm also facing mouse freezes after using new Acer laptop (Windows 7 , 64 bit) installed with Momentus 750GB. and now the Momentus 750GB already faulty after 1 week plus usage. The life is short.

3 separate messages in 3 separate threads do not improve your odds of getting technically sound advice. Suggest you return the laptop to the manufacturer and have them solve your problem.

When was your last refresher course?  23 years and 11 months ago?

Well, maybe I should mention, that I have 24 years of professional experience handling different computer systems and I can easily recognize obvious things. It's not one of them.

Well, your scathing comments are not very helpful. And you don't have really much advice apart from "reinstall your OS". I bought Seagate, beacuse it has tools to clone the drive. These tools DO WORK, as I've used them many times before. There is something wrong with Momentus XT and I was hoping someone had similar experience so we could figure common system elements.

If you want to challenge me about various computer architectures and operating systems, please go ahead, if you are not afraid.

Seagate should remove the cloning software from this site and cease to support it. It is too unpredictable and generate too many problems. Let the OEM of the software figure out what the problem is.

Re: Momentus XT 2nd Gen 750GB mouse freezes

Well for someone with 24 years experience you sure sound like someone who discovered a PC yesterday,

Let me try one last time to educate you,

Windows XP - 2002

MMXT 750 - 2011

Clone o/s

MMXT 750 SSD hybrid

Cloned o/s from conventional HDD

Did you think that the SSD is the same as the HDD?

Does it not occour to you after 5 years your o/s may have a missing file or two, after all you did say you hoover it regularly, and cleaners can take the wrong files at times without you realising,

Anyway for someone with 24 years experience who has the PC infront of him, you sure are expecting a lot from users who aren't able to physically see the PC nor know what sort of life the o/s has had, nor know what other interupters are connected to the PC, I assume you've disconnected all USB devices to see if it still happens, maybe your mouse interface is worn out, i.e the ps2 or usb ports are hammered out, maybe the XT doesn't like your old PSU maybe it's now buckling as it's capacitors have aged, maybe your bios is so old it's not able to run an XT properly,

And basically why are you blaming a HDD for a mouse problem, if it was the HDD the mouse wouldn't work at all, is the mouse a ball one, is it full of fluff? are your video drivers up to date, are your chipset drivers current,

Bottom line is why take bleeding edge tech and expect it to be 100% compatible with something that should be in the bin by now, you've now spent weeks on this to save re-loading your programs fresh, what does that say about you, or is it you simply don't have a set up disk available,

So many possibilities, but the basics are you have an o/s written to a different type technology and can't figure out why it's not working properly,

24 years, don't make me laugh.

@cantitbebeat

I came on this tread to give you a hand ---- because it was clear that the OP feels that he knows everything there is to know and refused your (and mine) sensible ideas.

The one constant in this business is we are all learning new things all the time, and more than once, we have opps... this should have worked!

I spent a lot of time fixing the issues with SSDs and XP, and Vista and can tell you war stories that led to the creation of the TRIM command in Windows 7.

Before the TRIM command, it was essentially a "you fix it yourself" situation with SSDs. Hybrids are so new that there is not a lot of support from Microsoft, and serious support, hopefully, will be built into Windows 8.

But there is a lot to learn, a lot of incompatibilities. It is simply not possible to claim that cloning works all the time. It works SOME of the time. (I don't advertise it, but I am actually typing this on a cloned drive that worked).

But if there is a problem --- the rule of thumb is to always cut out complications as a part of debugging.

Enough --- we can bring horses to water, but we cannot make horses drink.

Re: Momentus XT 2nd Gen 750GB mouse freezes

I actually had a 4 year-old system, XPSP3_32, with lots of software installed and couldn't afford to do a clean install. However, after cloning to an SSD (Intel X25-M G2 160 GB), all kinds of strange freezings appeared. Usually on system startup or when I double clicked on icons... freezes for about 10 seconds. I had to do a clean install.

During the last year I learned something valuable, I believe: If you want to go from a HDD to an SSD or Hybrid drive and you experience freezes after an otherwise successful clone... you don't have another choice than to clean install.

Learned this the hard way...

Best regards.

Re: Momentus XT 2nd Gen 750GB mouse freezes

Hi

I have a problem that sounds very similar (to me). EVERYTHING freezes every once in a while for up to a aprox. a half minute. Clean win7 install is done, and all drivers are up to date. I did not notice the freezing behavior during the first week(s). But now it has become very annoying. The drive is in an acer aspire timeline 5820tg, if that should be interesting... To me it doesn't sound to unlikely that these drives aren't functioning too well with win7. Aka, the drive is faulty.
